How attached are you to your snakes?
Some people here want to pass a law saying you can't keep a snake that can exceed 8'. I think I'd move to another state, and I was wondering if most of you would do the same.

Well the grandfather law doesnt work not in New York anyway. I went through the whole thing with my Burms. I had 6 and they wanted $200 each for a permit. I have custady of my 4 kids and 200 was not an option. I kept 3 on the down low and adopted 3 off, 2 down to florida. It is very hard to let go of your pets. Just remember for everyone you know atleast 1 is willing to call and rat on you. I am glad the list NY made they took off the RTB because my girl is almost 10'. I wish the state would lay of and go after more important things and leave our reptiles alone.

What needs to be done is better educate the general public and local political offices. They see the bad, i.e. A burm found in the halls of a NY apt with a lump the size of a missing dog... They don't see the benefits of owning such an animal , due to the fact that they don't know any better. Or are under educated in the general idea of keeping snakes. Where most of these laws pop up are from escaped large boids that attack other pets. ( mind you when a 80lbs dog mauls a little kid they put it to sleep and enforce leash laws more) I'm a dog person, and there is no reason for a properly trained dog to attack... it is still the owners fault... not having it properly fenced it, no leash, or just general disregard for the welfare for your dog or others... but anyway, there needs to be more outreach towards other people that are not in the herp community. You not going to change every ones view, but if you could reach out to enough people before such a law is passed then there is a better chance of us (herp community) to prevail over these laws. I got off topic LOL
Well here in FL I dread the day that a law will be passed for and large boids.
I really don't know what I would do. If a law was passed I don't know if it would help if the police found out, I'm sure there would be some publication on 12FT BURMESE PYTHON found in mans house. It is a wild beast! 10 men had to drag it out by the tail fearing for their lives...
Would you be OK with breaking the law? what if someone found out? Its a hard choice to give up something you love for a law that most don't agree with. I hope it will never come to that, but the way things look in FL it might just happen.
Ill just move to MT.. even there the cops cant find all the houses.

There are laws against keeping snakes a certain size, and then there are laws against keeping "protected" snakes. This is all well and good if they are indeed "protected", but here in Jamaica they are not...90 percent of people seeing a yellow snake (Jamaican Boa) will kill it if given the chance. The 5 young Jamaican Boas I am keeping were acquired from an unscrupulous pet shop owner who told me he had them and asked me to keep them for him. Well I never gave them back and I still have them because he was going to sell them to anyone who had the money he was asking, and that is illegal.
So here I am illegally raising these boas (they are doing well) and hoping that one day when they are bigger, I can release them somewhere where they may just have a chance to survive...but their habitat here in Jamaica is disappearing very rapidly and this stupid government is dead set against any environmental concerns and is destroying this country in leaps and bounds with unsustainable development...so I don't know what will come of my efforts.
Oh well.

You're right, but it's easier said than done. A lot of people have an attitude that laws can fix everything. I don't care if my neighbor has a 90' python, or the Loch Ness Monster, or a rabid junk yard dog as long as it stays under control and relatively quiet. I will only get concerned when it infringes on my rights by coming into my yard or house (like their cat does). Honestly, if you keep cobras, mambas, or anything else, and they are kept under control, it should be your business. Until I prove irresponsible, the law shouldn't apply to me. Should we outlaw alcohol just in case someone gets behind the wheel of their car drunk? I don't think so. These people will be hard to beat, because they obviously can't reason.
