What if?
I don't want to ask such a touchy subject in any other thread devoted to Steve Irwin. There is a lot of speculation going on how this may have happened, including the story of the camera man. I have yet to hear any view of what the camera might have captured. I don't want to see him receive the barb but to better understand what happened... I hope no one is low enough to pass this on to the public and show the demise of such a loved person.
I just wanted to hear what people thought about the camera view itself. Do you think is actually saw it? How long did they tape?
There are many shark documentaries, one of which a guy lost a leg, as they pulled him on the boat they showed he lost his leg above the knee I believe. Another where they actually filmed the attack on the mans calf. If these men would have passed away would these ever be aired?
well i just answer my own question with a search..
Videotape of Steve Irwin's last moments shows him pulling a poisonous stingray barb from his chest but no evidence that he had provoked the fish, officials said Tuesday, as tributes poured in for TV's beloved "Croodile Hunter."
Police were holding the tape as evidence for a coroner's inquiry — a standard procedure in high-profile deaths or those caused by other than natural causes

I would still like to know everyone thoughts if this should be released? Or if his family would ever release it?

I think that it will eventually hit the internet, but that doesn't mean it SHOULD. I don't think it should be made public. I try to look at it from his family's point of view. If your father was killed, would you want the video of it aired around the world for everyone's viewing pleasure?

I'm sure it will end up on You Tube, but I think that anyone who watches it has poor judgement skills and is as tastless and lacking in character as the genius who posts it for viewing. This is a video of a person dying (it doesn't matter who it is), if this video was of your father, would you want it public? I wouldn't. Whatever the family decides to do with the video is their right, but I won't be viewing it.

No way,
I thought at first maybe I'd like to see just to know what the true story was; but like Megan said " this is a person dying" anyone that wants to watch this has something seriously wrong with them.
The only way my father's video would be posted would be to know that it would someday save someone's life. (EMT training)

i think he would want us to see it. he died doing what he loved. i would want to watch it, just because he literally gave his life to animals.
but i guess i have poor judgement and i must have something seriously wrong with me

I have never nor will I ever want to see any human being die -- in any manner on film -- especially on YouTube or iFilm. People need to realize that life is sacred. There should NOT be ANY entertainment value in watching a human being die -- no matter who they are.
I doubt Terri Irwin or John Stainton would allow the video to be publicly viewed. That's not to say that someone won't make a copy and spread it around the Internet. I won't watch it -- and agree with Megan on the lack of character and soul of anyone who does watch such a video. .
That's my .02 worth of opinion.

I would watch it for two main reasons, to see exactly what happened and perhaps see/learn exactly what went wrong. To learn from one's own mistakes is good to learn from the mistakes of others is also good.
Hopefully, if the footage is made public it is done so with the permission of his family.

I agree that the family should have the final say in realeasing the video. If it is released by the family, I don't know if I would view it or not. I guess if I did it would not be to see a man die but rather out of curiosity of see what this type of animal could do. If you judge people by wanting to see the video, do you also think that the people that run out to see what's happening when a fire truck pulls up next door or the people that slow down to look at a bad traffic accident are souless people too? I think not, it is just curiosity for the most part.
Peace!

i have seen MANY people die, sometimes in my very hands as i work on them. I have about 20 years left until i retire and i will see MANY more go, regardless of my efferts, BUT i do NOT care to see Steve's death. Similar to: i dont want to forget 9/11, but i don't need to see it on TV anymore either. IMO

not to go OT here, but I heard one of the major news stations was going to rebroadcast their tapes from 9/11 just as they did 5 years ago.
it was kind of disappointing to hear that.

Entertainment....no, of course it shouldn't be that. However I believe that for the sake of education it would be acceptable. If I or somebody in my family were to die and there was something to be gained by others from the knowledge of the situation, then I'd be the first to show them the film.

I don't know if that is such a bad thing or not. Do you remember in the immediate months after 9/11 how the country came together and bonded in a way that brought us all together. It seems to me, as time has passed, that we have fallen into some of our old complacent ways, and perhaps, it would doe some good to remind us of the horrors of that day and what we are actually facing in the world today. Just my opinion though.
Peace!!

I feel it is up to Terri to decide if the video gets released, although I probably don't have to say that it might have already been compromised. Let's face it, if someone who was greedy enough and lacked morals got their hands on that video it would be sold to the highest bidder.
Honestly I feel it should be entirely the family's decision, they knew him more than we did, and would know wether he would want his final moments caught on tape.. If the family released it, I don't know that I would watch it, especially knowing it was his final moments.
I can understand the desire to try to learn from it and to see what happened. If the family disapproves of the release, to watch it would be entirely disrespectful to the family and to Steve.
Personally, if I were Terri, I would NOT release the video, I would want it, but I seriously doubt I could ever watch it.

I spend a ton of time in the water snorkeling with my sons. We had multiple encounters with stingrays this weekend. If the video is released with the permission of the family, I will absolutely watch it to observe the behavior of what otherwise seems like a docile animal. I believe it would be of some benefit to divers.

I do not want to watch it. But I wont hold it against someone who does. None of us are the same, and we all dont want or like all of the same things which makes us US! May everyone be safe and take care in all that we do. My heart goes out to the family and all who were in his life.

as much as I dont really like the way he dealt with alot of animals, I still dont want to see the guy get nailed, but I can see how certain people especially the diving community would benefit from knowing how to prevent future incidents.
