Look at what he has done (scale rot)
Well I received a free albino cal king a while back and now it has scale rot...
One of my buddies from the area wanted to go buy a Burmese from a local pet store. Mind you he knows nothing of herps. I talked him out of buying a burm and I would give him the king, IF he came by a few times so I could show him how to clean cages ( not that hard ), pick up the poop, properly handle a snake, change water, check temps, etc. He actually agreed. I mentioned that if he couldn't take the time to stop by and help me out a few days he wouldn't be able to properly take care of any snake, let alone a burm. Well after 3 weeks of stopping by I finally gave him the whole set up and the snake for FREE... I stopped by a probably 6-8 times and everything was great! New substrate, clean water, temps were fine, humidity.. Everything seemed to be going just fine. On the last visit I noticed the king was shedding and it was coming off in one nice piece! GREAT that's a plus! But after almost 2 months he called me up and said I needed to stop by.
The following day I took a trip out to his place to find what I believed the same shed.... and the poor guy had scale rot from not changing the substrate... I didn't lose my cool.. didn't say a word.. just started unplugging the heat pads, and picking up the tank.. "Hey what do you think your doing" he comments.. "Well I'm taking back this snake you obviously cant take care of and if you think you have something to say about it, why don't we go down to the animal services right down the street." No reply. "well Ill see you later"
So after the crappy story I have put him in a clean tub with paper towel, fresh water and applied Neosporin without any pain killer in it.
This was Thursday when I picked him up and now just getting to post about it. I haven't been able to stop beating my self up about the fact that I trusted someone to take care of my poor guy. All in all I feel that it will heal up just fine, there is no puss or ozzing and if it continues ill take him to the vet. I also noticed small spots which I believed to be mites! but in fact they were just pieces of dirt... what a relief with that!
SIGH

I wish that snakes weren't considered cool and edgy pets; too bad they don't have the same status as, say, fish. People only get fish because they honestly LOVE fish.

I can't comprehend what would have happened if he did get a burm, and four years from now it would be loose in the neighborhood. This did it for me... this will be the last attempts I will make to GIVE someone a snake, who I trusted to take care of him. I have sold a few in the past that I have picked up along the years, but all were never intended for "pets". The ones I got rid of were taken in by me, due to the fact I couldn't sit by and let these people own these snakes. Some needed to be taken to the vet besides the regular check ups I do to ensure my collection wont be affected and i have spent a great deal of money on it. I have a job where I work to hard to let someone like this ruin the attempt I made to better the cal kings life.... this is how it turned out! I haven't had a bad experience in the past with re-homing some of the snakes I have taken in, granted its not that many(around 10). I'm sure this wont be the last time though. From now on ill stick with people who are experienced enough and have the decency to take care of them properly, which I thought he did...

People surprise you sometimes. Sorry you had to go through with that, but kudos to you for putting the snake before a friendship.
You know how to get rid of scale rot, so I imagine a few weeks will do wonders.
I have gotten to where I take in a LOT more animals than I let go..LOL I can only take in so many though.
