An Awful Thing to Wake Up To...
Our neighbors have a lot of dogs, like 6-7 (at last count anyway). They moved in about a year ago and ever since then there has been a lot of dog drama. They don't keep them on leashes (they have a fenced in back yard, but they get out). Really, the whole leash thing was just more of a nuisance than anything else until we found out that two of their dogs had Parvo. Yes, Buster has been vaccinated BUT when there is still a chance that he could become infected too, or any other dogs/ puppies in the neighborhood for that matter, the leash issue became a health issue.
The neighbors had been doing a little better and we would only see a few of the dogs out every once in a while (maybe every other day). Well, this morning I took Buster out and their older poodle mix is lying in the middle of the cul-du-sac. I thought that maybe it was laying down, then I didn't see it's chest moving and I thought "Oh no, it's not breathing". I got as close as I dared with Buster on the leash (of course he wanted to go play with the dog) and noticed what I though was blood. I went back inside and got Brett to go tell them their dog had died (it was hit by a car).
It's such a senseless thing that could have been avioded, so if you don't keep your dogs on a leash, please consider it.

I have similar problems with my nieghbors cats...they just run free and bother the heck out me---if I didn't like the people so much it would be more of an issue but I am not a cat person...and when I get cats on my patio table eating my food it really bothers me ::shutters:::
But the issue as a pet owner is animal safety...what happens when the cat does not come home because of the same sitaution Meg described?

eeeeehh..
I think in this case, it was a release for the dog. The sad thing is, they will just run out and get another, to replace the one they lost, because they are just "SOOO HEARTBROKEN" and they "just cant imagine WHY someone would do such a horrible thing"
People like this claim to care, but they are too wrapped up in their own selfish wants and desires to truly be able to care about the animals.
Dont get me wrong though, dogs get out of fences all the time..They could be healthy, happy, and mainly indoor dogs, occasionally let out side to exercise or use the bathroom, and escape to certain demise.
Its a trajedy for the dogs, but nothing replaces supervision.
In this case it was neglect and cruelty.
I think if Animal control had received previous calls about these dogs being kept in a state of illness and neglect prior to being roadkill, they should come out and remove all of them, and issue a fine, and ban them from owning any animals for at least 2-3yrs. Maybe that is strict, but if you continue to let your dogs be a nuisance, and you have been notified by authorities, and the problem STILL continues to the demise of the animal, its a CLEAR case of ABUSE and NEGLECT.

That is never good. I went to my work to check on the sick dogs this morning and found one of them dead and that was terrible. It died of Parvo because it was just too young to survive it...

We have terrible neighbors across the street form us who do the same with cats. They feed them but don't claim ownership. The cats have had litter after litter and half of them are found dead in their yard or run over by a car. Kelly and I have called the Humane Society on them several times and no action has been taken. A few months ago we saw that one of them had a hind leg completely torn off and was hanging by a piece of skin. We cornered it to get a good look and the infection was definately fatal. When we knocked on the door and told the owners about it, they blew us off and told us to leave. We told them that would try to capture the cat and take it to our vet who would either fix him or euthanize him for free. They told us not to bother and let it die. We tried all night to catch this thing, to no avail and found it dead in OUR yard the next day. I've episodes of Animal Cops where the owners could be charged with neglegence and fined, maybe even jail time. We've tried to contact the authorities, but no one seems to care.

I'm not trying to steal your thunder by telling this story (I think most anybody who is caring and responsible with animals has stories like this to tell). anyway, here's my story.
.
My first Doberman and I used to run the sidewalk along the boulevard near my house. It was a quiet road in the late evening and the homes were set back so that we weren't bothering anyone, or them us. A house near there ( I never found out which one) had a large Boxer/Bulldog mix that came roaring out after us one night.. but he was not really a mean dog so after some loud negotiations with Jake (my 95lb Doberman) things went ok and though we would sometimes see him, he never bothered us again more than maybe barking..
.
One night on the return leg, not close to where we had seen him before, my dog alerted me to something in a hedge and there was this poor dog looking up at us. His head split open and one leg torn almost off from a run in with a car. It was obvious he recognised us and there was no fight in him. I went door to door 20 houses in each direction on both sides of the street and no one would claim that poor dog.. I went and got him and my vet came out. After a few minutes he said the dog had to be put down.. and he did it gratis.
.
Anybody's dog can have an accident but just like your story, that's a sad story of a nice dog that needed better owners...
.
Gus.

Meg how old is Buster now???
Parvo has an incubation period of 5-10 days and it usually starts with bloody stool, then vomiting, but you know there isn't any rules to it.
Poor dog... the thing didn't have a chance against the car.

Gus - That is a horrible thing to happen upon. I can certainly understand that accidents happen. It is unfortunate that fate was tempted one too many times for my neighbor's dog.
Kim - Buster is a little over one year old...ok, ok, he's one year, one month and three weeks old but I didn't want to sound like one of those "mom's" who talk about their "children's" ages in terms of months until he's three! So much for that! I'm pretty sure that Buster is fine (as far as the Parvo), but I want a Yorkie some day and now I'm scared to death to get one. The neighbor's dogs have been all over my yard on several occasions, and I couldn't bring a puppy home that wasn't fully vaccinated.

***UPDATE***
I am in Orlando and Brett just called to say that our neighbors now have (what he thinks is ) TWO new Yorkie pups. Just to clarify:
1. They don't keep their dogs on leashes AT ALL
2. They live in an environment that has been exposed to Parvo (two of the other dogs have/ had it).
3. The other dogs are now only up to date on vaccines because of the Parvo incident (yes, this means that they were NOT up to date previously).
4. Now I have to live across the street and stand by as two little innocent Yorkies (a dog that I have wanted for over 10 years, but I am not going to get for a looong while - until we move - because I can't bring a puppy home who isn't 100% vaccinated) possibly die.
Why would someone do this? Why would you, knowing that you had to treat two of your dogs for Parvo (and that you exposed the rest of your dogs - if not the whole neighborhood) bring defenseless puppies into that situation?
Sorry, I just wanted to vent.

That is so sad.
I had a puppy get parvo from what they were calling the "second shot syndrome" about 10 years ago. I was a nervous wreck because we had 4 other vaccinated dogs in the house. Luckely they were all okay and obviously had enough protection from their shots, but I would NEVER bring another dog onto the property. We even told our landlord when we moved out so the new tenants would be aware that it was on the property.
Very, very sad.
