Those in favor of simplified spelling say children would learn faster and illiteracy rates would drop. Opponents say a new system would make spelling even more confusing.

It's been 100 years since Andrew Carnegie helped create the Simplified Spelling Board to promote a retooling of written English and President Theodore Roosevelt tried to force the government to use simplified spelling in its publications. But advocates aren't giving up.

That is ludicrous! I cannot believe that is even being brought to the table as an option of how to teach children to read and write faster. Maybe the money that it would cost to do that (and it would cost a great deal) could be better spent if it was invested in the school systems. More resources, better tools, etc. It's not that the kids are learning any slower because they can't grasp it, it's that adults now don't care as much as they did years ago (this is my opinion). I had reading homework when I was learning to read, my teachers would help individual students, my parents took me to the library and let me pick out books that I wanted to read and then they helped me learn to read too. Learning is not something that occurs on school property only. People are always learning, children are constantly learning, they are sponges and they want to soak up everything they can. It's unfortunate that some parents look to school as a day care center and because of this the kids miss out...big time. So then I have a question. If we teach kids to read this way won't it be more confusing to have to teach them that "Yes Little Johnny, you learned to spell beach as "beech" but that's not really how it is spelled." OR the way that it sounds is that the whole system will change and that adults will spell that way also? That part confuses me.

Thank you Megan!
I got so irritated and fed up with Mary (my 9yr old)'s teacher this year.. Shes NINE and misspells EASY words, and when Ryan asked about the spelling list, her teacher just blew it off...and made the comment "thats what spell check is for"
I told her that might be HER simple solution to HER children's problems, but since MY tax dollars are essentially paying her salary, she should seriously consider TEACHING the kids how to spell.
