My thoughts on PetCo
Well I what to Sioux Falls SD last friday, I ran out of med rats, so I went to Safari Land, which is a very good pet store, cheap feeder rats and I've bought a lot of snakes from them, and I picked up a hatchling Iguana. Well that stop went well exepct I couldn't use there rest room, so down the road we went and I thought what the heck let's stop at Petco, I gotta go any way. While in the store I spot these two black-throat montiors, they where asking $80 each and to ask for assistance, so needless to say I did. I asked about care requirments; if they differ from Savanahs, pretty cose exept they where feeding them crickets all the time and a pinkie once a week. Well I came to a decission and I was going to take the male and come back up to get the female in a week, limited funding, went up there to get rats, well after I told them that she asked if I wanted both, I told her yeah but I would have to come back up next week on my day off and hoped they would still have her. She ask if I had a cage big enough for them and light and every thing they needed, so I went down the list of animals I have and all cages and equipment that I have and experice to show that I'm more then capable of takeing care of them. So she proceeded to get a box put both of them in there and wrote "no charge" on it. I was like huh, she said they where for adotion and they wanted them to go to a good home and you wouldn't beleive how many poeple where interested but only wanted to put them in a 10 gallon tank. Well any way here they are and there not eating cricketts or pinkies. Those are p/k hopper rats hope you enjoy.

Again re-affirming my belief that one has to take each PetCo store on a store by store basis, there are some good some bad. All depends on the people working there.

I agree Amy..
Depends on the store...Fayetteville store here is usually pretty crappy with their care and cage maintenance, but the last time I was there, the cages were at least clean.
Congrats on your monitors Lil Eatin Machines

Congrats
Congrats on your new addition, and I agree, each one is different, Petco gets lots of bad rap, and most of the time rightly so, but look at how many petcos thier are...they are like the walmart of the pet industry. I had a simular thing happen, I was in a petco in the reptile section, and was asked by the "reptile manager" if I was interested in adopting a leopard gecko that had lost its tail, and they didn't want to sell one with a regenerated tail, I said YEAH!!!! we kept it for a few months, tail started to grow back, and we gave it to a very HAPPY boy as his first lizard, and I still get to see it to this day...We have gotten a few things from Petco, and have no problem admitting it..sometimes they don't get my business, sometimes they do...Thats a great story and congrats on your new Varanus...

I'm not saying Petco is bad. Almost every pet store I've been in there is something wrong with a certain species it's not the stores fault they hire people who say they know what there doing, and some of them do but lack the knowledge of certain species, it seem they try to do there best but when you try to help them in certain care requirments they get alittle hostile like I'm the one in charge here and this is how your going to do this. One of my best expriences was at a Petco in Omaha, they wouldn't sell me a snake, but it wasn't just the snake, they weren't selling any of their reptile they had a mite problem and they wouldn't sell any of them till it was fixed and I tried, even with all the exprience that one has in getting rid of such a small problem they had a bigger problem but that's how they delt with there problem, just what they would have needed to sell a sick animal to someone that couldn't get rid of it and then they blame the store for it, as to where the store here you can see the mites on there corns and red-tails and they still try to push the sale, but that I'm still not sure on, because they know me on a name basis. Well any way the best thing came out of going up there if they ever get any reptiles in for adoption I'm the first one they will call, which is good for me I'm looking forward in opening a reptile park in the near future, and everything that I can get would always make a good addicton.
