Cape driver accused of dragging dog

Readers' forum: If convicted, what punishment?
A Cape Coral man is facing animal cruelty charges today after police say he dragged a 10-pound dog behind a car for blocks Wednesday.
Jeffrey Candler, 49, of 2113 N.E. 33rd St., was charged with one count of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor. He was still in Lee County Jail this morning.
Candler was arrested in February 2004 on charges he failed to register as a sex offender, jail records show.
The tan female chihuahua mix is being treated at Viscaya-Prado Veterinary Hospital, 920 Country Club Blvd. The dog suffered a broken front right leg and major wounds around its body, the skin of some of the paws peeled away.
The animal is receiving intravenous antibiotics and fluids and pain medicine today, said Dr. Lisa Gote, a veterinarian who has been caring for the animal.
“She’s got multiple road burns where her skin is peeled off,” Gote said. “She had gravel stuck in the wounds that we had to pull out.
Gote said she plans to run more tests and X-rays on the dog today.
She said she’s concerned the dog may have suffered a broken jaw because there’s a wound on her chin. The animal is expected to recover with the proper care, but it will be a long, painful road back to health, Gote said.
Robert Keating and wife Arlene Keating saw the suspect driving a white sedan south on Santa Barbara Boulevard while the dog was tied to the back bumper with a rope about 3 p.m.
When the car turned onto Jacaranda Parkway, the dog snapped loose from the vehicle, they said.
Robert Keating, 61, dropped his wife, Arlene Keating off to tend to the dog, which was lying in a small puddle of blood. Her breathing was labored.
He drove up to get a license plate number of the offending vehicle.
The Keatings then told police about the incident and took the injured animal to the veterinary hospital, where Arlene Keating works as a part-time receptionist.
“We were kind of startled,” said Robert Keating, a retired police offer from Suffolk County, N.Y. “It looked like a little puppy was following behind a car. We noticed the dog was kind of bouncing in the road.”
When officers confronted him at his home, Candler first said he tied the dog to the bumper while he went fishing, and when he came back, the dog was gone, said police spokeswoman Dyan Zedeker.
Candler said he was making fliers for the missing dog for two hours.
But when the officer asked to see one of them, Candler went to his computer, opened up a file and typed “lost dog,” according to Zedeker.
Candler then changed his story but said it was an accident, police officials said.
“I can’t say it was done on purpose,” Arlene Keating said. “I just don’t know the circumstance. My main concern was the dog.”
The Keatings haven’t decided whether they’ll adopt the dog.
As for a new name, the only one that has come to mind to Arlene Keating is “Lucky.”
The really sad thing is she doesn't act like a chihuahua at all. She hasn't snapped once and was wagging her tail this morning. She moved right into all of our hearts. Her name is actually "Shawney".

We all just wished that we could tie him to the bumper and drag him......
What's even more sad is that there were 2 other people in the car.

That happened here several years back, and since then. A guy drug his Husky behind his truck to "train her not to stray". He tied her to the sideview mirrors and drove up and down an asphalt street. Neighbors saw it. I forget what the sentence was on that.
I will dig it up if anyone is interested. Im sure its online somewhere. So tragic. Im glad this little puppy made it, but how horrible!
