Good ways to attract snakes??? Please look
We are building our house on the edge of the city. Its like an old farming are where there aren't many roads. Yesterday I got a call that my dad found some snakes he has never seen before. I have looked for snakes many times and only found garters. Well now that I looked here are what I KNOW live down there
Garters
Bulls
Ring Necks
and I'm sure there are more around.
What are some ways to attract more snakes to the area? I found a small ringneck yesterday under an old tin sign. There are a few fallen buildings and our neighbors have lots of old shingles that they let me lay out. Any places I should look inparticular for snakes? Old barns, under pieces of rock, shingles, wood, ect? I will try and get some pics of the area and hopefully you guys can point out spots that look good. I have seen milk snakes and king snakes about 10 miles west of there so I'm sure I could find them their too if I know where to look.
Thanks
Jake
PS. I am very board which Is why I just typed this

I wish I knew. All I ever see are the garters. Not that it's a bad thing but I wouldn't mind something different.

For a snake to survive anywhere in the wild, it needs these 3 things in this order...
1- Shelter
2- Water
3-Food
While you might find random snakes now and then anyway without one or more of these things due to them passing through, you won't ever have them stay around if any of that is missing. This doesn't mean there has to be a stream or pond nearby though constant water does indeed help, it's not always that important if there is enough rainfall.
Here's a tip for you ...When you clean mouse or rat cages, Keep the soiled litter and sprinkle it under tin and plywood in remote areas where you want to lure them to. I'm sure you have already thought about laying out tin and plywood right? now bait it

Ya, I have seen a few garters and 1 dead bull snake at our new house. This was the first time I have ever seen a ringneck in person. It was so pretty. I will continue to go back to the shingles I laid out once it gets a bit warmer. Who knows what I'll find

Thanks JS. We are considering making a small pond too. We have one now and its a lot of work but maybe a small one will help. There is a neighbor up the street that has a pond full of frogs, maybe I could get permission to herp their land. I know we have lots of moles around here and some mice. I lifted up a tarp last year and like 50 moles came running out. I killed 3 of them by stepping on them and later identified them as moles. I guess just to keep on trying is the best way. I am hoping to find a milk snake or some sort of king snake around our property. Whats the best temps to go look? It ranges from 60's at night to 100 durring the day sometimes so theres a wide range of temps.
