I've been working with exotic birds for 5 years now...in an all bird pet store. I've got a male pied cockatiel, Dusky Pionus, Alexandrine Ringneck, and an English Budgie. I had a yellow collard mini macaw, but I ended up giving him to a breeder that had a female (I had a male) and he gave me the Alexandrine Ringneck. Birds are great, but a lot more of a pain to take care of compaired to reptiles. Having a bird (especially African greys and cockatoos) are like having a 2 yr old child forever. If they don't get attention all the time, they pull out their feathers and scream (ESPECIALLY cockatoos!!).
I'm not saying that all birds are like this, but I've seen too many like that b/c people don't know how to take care of them properly.
Sorry for the rant, just that in the time that I've been working at the store I've seen too many birds go nuts, or people buy birds for the wrong reason (status symbol). If you're interested in ever getting a bird, do your home work. And a lot of apartments don't accept birds (like cockatoos....if that concerns you).
Just my .2

I know my appt does acept birds, they know about all my herps, and I've talked to them about having a bird. heck, they even let me use their woodshop to build cages ! which helps out a lot, otherwise I wouldn't really have access to any machines/tools. Hmmmm, now I'm not sure what type of bird to get.....

BW caught a Parakeet outside our house a couple months ago. We were going to keep it if we didn't find it's owner, but she showed up and claimed her bird.
My father did the same thing with a Cockatiel about 13 years ago, but she eventually died of old age.
There's something about the men in my life catching domestic birds...
