Rare sighting this morning
Driving to a meeting this morning I saw a very rare sight sitting in a field off the road. It was a rather large bald eagle sitting in the middle of a frost covered field with what looked like a large rodent in front of it. So I guess this guy had captured the rodent and was in the process of eating it. I knew they were in the area but I have never seen one in the wild before not in flight. I wish I carried my camera with me so I could have gotten some shots of it.

Wierd thing is in this area of Alabama they were around till the mid 70's and just vanished. Now state Fish and Game say's there is a population of 16 known birds and maybe more. I am just happy they made a come back after the huge DDT and PCB problems of the 70's placed them on the endangered list.
But seeing that one this morning was awsome.

I love sightings like that! I just got back from the Snowgoose Festival in Delta and it was a birder's paradise... in addition to the geese and all the waterfowl, we saw several raptors including a bald eagle, a golden eagle, several kestrels, some rough-legged hawks, and even a prairie falcon.

I would love to see an animal like that in the wild... It would be even cooler to see them hunting =).

Wow, the only large raptors I get to see in the wild are from far off here in AZ. Biggest one I've ever seen was at the San Diego Zoo. The Harpy Eagle. NOW THERE'S A RAPTOR! But I do love our Bald Eagles.

I saw a story on TV that in Homer Alaska they are so numerous as to be pests. The film they had was incredible, they were like seagulls, hundreds of them....
