....i remember someone either saying in a post or tellin me in chat or im one day that "in order to keep hots you need to unlearn what you have learned with boids and colubrids" cant remember who said it but if you think about it its totally true i mean if for some odd reason your not thinkin straight and you think you can just stick your hand into a hots cage the way you would any other snake you got a world of hurt comin your way.....and basicly Irwins saying "crikey i just reached down and picked up a gaboon with my bare hands and you can do it to!!!!..... its sad to say but im guessing about 75% of people out there are inpressionable and will see that as"well if im really careful i can freehand a hot like him!! theres nothing to it"

Ok-
I just read this whole thread, can't believe I never saw it before. I would like to add my .02 to this great debate.
First, Steve did a show that had a lot of his bites on it a while back. It was probably the most informative one he ever did. I guess after he gets bitten he can then tell you all the facts about that snake. I agree that he is crazy, and that he does have people try to do what he does. I think that we cannot try and stop these idio...people from doing stupid things. Personally, because of him I will NEVER own a hot.
On the other hand, I do like and respect Jeff Corwin. He has a lot of information and a degree in Herpotology. I read an article he gave and when asked about snakes as pets he said to research the animal and then if it was right for them then they could make great pets. He even named some of the books I own.
As far as these stupid people that threaten are hobby go....I think we should get some of the larger retics, not feed them for a month and put these people in with them covered in rabbitt scent and leave the room for a couple hours....J/K.
**Disclaimer**If any stupid people go missing I don't own a retic or other large python...yet

Just a quick note.............

On Croc Hunter last night it was his "Most Dangerous" Something or other. He picks up a Mojave Rattlesnake midbody and lets it crawl over his hands because he is "at one with the snake."

Just FYI: Mojave Rattlers are the most toxic rattlesnake. It is basically a Rattlesnake with Coral Snake venom!

I bet if you looked real close you could still see the ice crystals on the snake. Hard for a snake to bite when he is still partially frozen.

I seriously do not agree with Irwin's methodology. It's just too stupid.

Though, on last night's Corwin, he referred to venemous twice as poisonous. Then he turned around and made fun of himself when he almost incorrectly picked up an Egyptian Cobra (naja haje - which he said about 50 times). It was quite funny, him sitting there saying "Well, I wanna' be just like Jeff. I've seen Jeff handle the snakes, so I know what I'm doing."

Don't know if he was actually making fun of himself or making a sideways jab at Irwin, but it was funny all the same.

I am finally writing an actual article on this subject, so I figured I would bring it back to the top for the newbies
