Steve Irwin, Friend or Foe?

As entertaining and dramatic as Steve Irwin is, he is setting the WRONG example to people who don't know any better. He should pack it in while we still have a hobby.

truthfully i dont like the guys show myself he gives absolutely no info on the animal(none thats worth anything)and he kinda reminds me of a circus entertainer (juggling five flaming sticks at once)he seems a lot more interested in entertaining then teaching but truthfully i've only watched one of his shows halfway through then i turned it off because i was kinda disgusted by how lil info he really gives.... but thats my opinion

Well, I enjoy Steve's shows. If I remember correctly Steve does not hook or tong snakes b/c he believes that should only be done where there is no other option. To him, being bitten seems to be a better option than grabbing the snake around the neck and holding it up to the camera to show.
It surprises me that noone has mentioned the way that Steve jumps on crocs and wrestles them down. He never wants to anestitize any animal if he can keep from it. If risking his own limbs is what he has to do, that is what he does. I have heard him many times say that he would die for these animals, and I think that he proves he would. He never gets angry at the animal when he is bitten. He knows that is part of doing what he does. He takes RESPONSIBILITY for his own actions.

That is something that people, especially in America, tend to do these days. The fact that you did something stupid isn't really your fault. Most of the time if they can't nail it down to some one else they say it must be the way that their parents raised them. Wake up, and grow up people. You can't have mommies nipple forever. At some point you become an adult and have to start saying "man, I made a stupid choice when I did that!!" If you immitate something dangerous that someone else was doing, IT'S YOUR DECISION!!!! Therefore the consequesces are yours (or should be) alone to bear.

Not too long ago I offended someone that I really respect (We'll call him Jeff). A very good freind of mine (we'll call him Jim) had suggested that I do what offended "Jeff" and subsequently called him to explain that it was his fault. When I called "Jeff" to apologize he told me "Jim" had explained everything. I told "Jeff" I was an adult and made that decision on my own. THE FAULT WAS MINE. I screwed up so it was my fault.

I love this forum and and respect so many people here. I think that it is great to see people interacting w/o flame wars.

I think that the sad thing about that Faze is that we continue to cater to these people who don't take responsibility by sueing, and making others take the shackles of the stupid on. If people would just learn to take 5 seconds and ask themselves "Is this the right thing to do?", they would make a lot less errors in judgement. Even if they are stupid. Just b/c something is one way, doesn't make it right. Ya know Faze?

One the subject of permits, does anyone here activly seek legislation to get permits passed or reconciled? Don't you think that we could do a lot as herpers if we took up the mantle and ask for mandated permits before we ever got to the banning?

i dont think steve is a bad dude at all- he is doing what hes doing, and doing it for the mjority- remember that! i would love him to get deep in to the science of it, but face it- he does need ratings for what he does. the regular joe isnt gonna understand a lengthy discussion on snakes, husbandry, wild life, etc..... they want DANGER, DANGER, DANGER

i agree with what was said- there should be legislation, but the permits should be obtainable!
for whom- me! i am not a herpetologist, i didnt go to school, i am in a hobby and i love what i do! i shouldnt be barred because of such!

i agree, we all are the problem in one way or another- but the major problem is that person- lets call him vincent- the person who has no clue on reality! see's things and gotta have it, the impulse buyer- that happens to stumble onto a show and buys the anaconda, or retic, or if you are in P.A.- a rattler or copper head.........thats who we have to stop.

there are millions of people out there like that- why, i am not a psycologist- i dont know why these people have to "shock" people with their animal or what ever......those people- if they do go ahead and do something stupid- get bitten, have several hundred thousand dollars in hospital bills- they deserve it (if they live).

what does suck is what are we gonna do about it......1 bad apple does spoil the bunch!

i email all my assemblymen all the time, i m intouch with my local herp societies, and major breeders......i am also in touch with local law enforcement and a.s.p.c.a.
i have been inthis fight- i have won battles and lost battles. i keep going becaiuse i love my babies!

Here's an interesting thought: people with a large interest in herps and have access to internet will usually stumble into some herps sites now and them. who's to say that steve irwin is not a member here? commenting on this very thread! For the time being, as far as legislation goes, ourbest course of actio is to become involve (no money, just for information) on our enemies. I get regular newsletters and information form the API (Herper Enemy #1). I even request as many posters and other information as I can get to use as kindling [img]modules/Forum/images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif[/img] We have to watch the API, HSUS, and PETA very carefully and be aware of their agendas, stradegies, and methods. What we really need is a mole to infiltrate wach of these so we can get good information before it is released [img]modules/Forum/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif[/img] (Espianoge, whatever!)
