BIRMINGHAM - ZOO WORKER INJURED
A worker at the Birmingham Zoo is being treated for scalp wounds today after being attack by a 19-year-old lion. Doctor William Foster, director of the zoo, said Melissa Wright was taken to U-A-B Hospital, but details of her injury are not immediately available. Foster said she was conscious and talking. The attack happened this morning about 9:40 a-m as zoo workers fed animals and moved them from their overnight holding area to their outdoor exhibit area. Assistant Zoo Director Jeff Cook said a second employee was with Wright but was not injured. According to zoo spokesman Jamie Adcock, the lion named Sheeba was placed in a holding area to be monitored. He said the incident is under investigation.

And that is why so many zoos are moving away from free contact with animals towards protected contact.

IMO that isnt as good as it seems, less contacts makes the animals less familiar with humans

Only thing is never trust any animal which can cause you great harm. I am not sure if a change is needed or if it will even make a difference. You want animals that don't go ballistic at the sight of a human and freak out so as not to scare the paying visitors.

Their exposure to the visitors is enough to keep them from being too far stressed by the keepers.

Just proves a major point.... Those are not kitty cats
I am sad this person got hurt, but mostly when people get hurt its b/c someone didnt do something they should have. I only hope they fix the problem and not over react.
