This is an invitation to California folks, mainly. There's an organization in the Bay Area called Bay Area Wilderness Training (BAWT) which provides training and gear so disadvantaged youth can get outdoors. They've helped me take my high school students on several dozen wilderness expeditions in the last two years, and they've helped more than 120 other educators and youth workers to do the same. They, like everybody else, have fallen on hard times in the last year, and they're facing the possibility they may have to cut some services. They are a great organization -- so good, in my opinion, I'm doing development work without pay for them. We still have three spaces left on our first mountaineering expedition, which is a pledge/donor event sort of like the AIDS ride or the leukemia foundation marathon thing. What's in it for you is a professionally guided climb up the Hotlum Bolam Ridge. What's in it for the kids is the chance to sleep under the stars, camp in a tent, or climb a mountain for the first time. If you want people to preserve the natural world, you have to allow them to get to know it -- that's what we're doing, one kid at a time. So, if you'd like to know more about this, please shoot me an email ASAP at <mirabelasunshine@netscape.net>
Thanks --
Matt

Sound's amazing Matt, wish I could .
I think the highest Mt. in Oz is about half that.
A great adventure, and all for charity.
Hope you get lots of takers.!!

Pretrip orientation w/ guides and BAWT executive director in San Francisco 8/15
Meet in Berkeley to size boots & check out gear at Marmot 8/30, caravan to the mountain
On the mountain 8/31 to 9/2 (Saturday to Monday -- Labor Day weekend).
You'll be taking the Hotlum-Bolam route, more or less the north ridge of the mountain. No glacier travel involved, but you'll pass over large portions of the Hotlum glacier. Rope team travel & other techniques taught by Rich Meyer, of Shasta Mountain Guides. He's a good guy, I've climbed with him before. If you'd like more info, let me know -- I can email you or call you and get the ball rolling. One other climber signed on today, so I think there are only two spots left to fill.
