my mom has been waiting tables for almost 25 years, and she says that to make it easier you just treat each table like they are your family. i personally couldn't do that because i have no patience with my family, let alone strangers posing as my family. but i know when i have eaten where she works all of her customers seem very pleased with how friendly and un-fake she is and she usually ends up making way more in tips than she does hourly.

I've worked at a steak-house and a deli type place and loved it. I made great money but the hours stunk. I enjoy people and you give them a balance. Good service and treat all of them like they are your most important table and at the same time give them their privacy. Flirt, even if they are with someone but use judgement by striking up good conversation with the other party too and reading their reactions.
You'll love it. It was one of my favorite jobs. Better then typing at a computer all day long, every day and listening to the same old boring voices talking about Lyme disease and AIDS.

I waited tables when I was in school...it's really fun once you get some regular customers....it's like being at work but hanging out with your friends It's a fun job, but just like everything else, you will run into people who are hateful, no matter what you do, they are not going to be happy....you just have to learn to ignore them and don't let them get you down God Luck and I hope you make lots of $!!!

The best advice I can give you is to buy a GOOD pair of shoes with your first big paycheck! Not cheap ones either! Trust me...nothing will make you hate your job faster than a cheap pair of shoes that give you sore feet everyday! Good Luck!

12 years i waited tables
loved it never made more money ! My one big tip is do not make people wait , do not ignore your customers no matter how busy you are acknowledge them try to get their drinks out asap , so that way if you are busy and they have to wait they atl east have something in front of them ! Also when you take the order , I would put a m next what the man ordered w next to the women ect, just so when i brought them the food i didnt have to ask who ordered what and it looked like i had a good memory ! LOL ! Also do not forget to check back after they have their food make sure everything is allright ! DonT forget to ask if they want desert ... i did it this way i would start out saying for dessert tonite we have blah blah blah , that way they hear how good it sounds and you have a better chance of them saying yes to it ! Which gives you a higher bill = a higher tip !! Good luck !! Hope i was helpful !! | |
