I keep them b/c I find them interesting and I respect how powerful and beautiful they are. I love to watch them, let them crawl through my hands and watch them grow up. I have a dog that is my buddy. I don't need that from my snakes. I keep snakes purly out of a love for them. I don't ask for anything in return, and I don't expect it. Simply watching them thrive is enough for me.
That is something close to my usual answer. People who get it understand, and people who don't shake their head and shrug their shoulders. I kinda get a little chuckle out of it.

I think trinitywolf wrapped it up rather nicely...
There truely is nothing more pleaurable than seeing a snake grow up from a little squirt that's a tad nasty and the silliest thing within a hundred miles into a creature that personfies every facet of power and grace....
I myself have oddly enough developed a near religious fancination with them...
They arn't snakes anymore they are George, Frank, and Shirly, and I am above all else honored to be in their presence.
Of course they still have a speck of a brain and little if any emotions... But sometimes when I'm alone with them, especially with the ones that seem more "conscious" of their surrounding.... I look into their shinning eyes... and I want to believe that they are capable of something more...
Yes I know it's a poor case of delusion and an even worse case of personification...
But hey I can live a little crazy....

Pfft, my boa listens to me. Might not hear or answer...
I've always liked snakes, and my RTB has the BEST personality ever - he prefers human contact over anything else, never bites or strikes, eats nicely there's just some things about him that make him more indivudual than some people I know! I take great pride and pleasure in taking care of him, and that's enough for me
Oh, and he keeps my mother away we don't get along...

Everyone will answer this differently. I developed the love for snake's year's ago at a pet shop a guy had one and let me hold it and I was hooked! After dealing with them more I found out each has his or her on personality just as a dog or cat! Why do I keep snake's hum??? Let's see they only have to eat a couple time's a month?? They poop a couple time's a month??? The don't make noise??? They don't smell???? And let's see the contact thing?? Well I don't know but I bet you ask anyone here on this site that has had a snake for any length of time and they'll tell you that a bond is made between snake and handler quite often!! I've read post on here where snake's sometime's pick a certian person and bond with them and then strike out at anyone else that tries to handle them!!! Or as going as far as to single one person out they don't like and strike out only at that person!!

I get that question all the time too. When I take them out and carry them around while I watch a movie, or be here on RTB.net, my mom always says, "Why do you like those creepies so much?!" I just do!
I remember a year ago when I got my 1st ball python (1st snake), and I originally went in to the herp store for some poison dart frogs and chameleons. They guy was like, "Why do you want something that you can't hold?" and he asked me if I had ever considered getting a snake. I, of course, didn't, and he let me hold a ball python. Well, here I am now, with 2 snakes, and some more on the way (after this weekend's show!).
I know that my BP knows who I am. I don't let anyone touch him when he's in a shed, only I can hold him (usually just to clean up a bit or give fresh water) b/c I know he will he a lot more nervous when he doesn't know the other persons scent.
I was also told when I 1st got my BP that they don't like having their heads touched. Well, either my snakes have no nerves in their heads, or they really do like a nice rub now and then! Either under the chin, or on top of the head, they like it!
So, when someone says that snakes don't know anything, or feel for their keeper, I just tell them about my snakies.
I love them, and I know that they love me back!
Snakes have feelings too! And I think they show it when we care for them properly!
Just my .2

I think the reasons for snake keeping are different for each keeper. I am always amazed by every one of my herps every time I walk into my appartment, they give me somthing to look forward to 24-7
it's just one of those questions that if someone has to ask, they won't understand. -Juggalo

Actually, the dart frogs in trade here are either captive bred or wild caught that will lose their poison making ability quickly.
Captive bred don't have the ability to produce it as their diet doesn't include the things they eat in the wild that lets them produce the poison.
The wild caught ones lose it after a short period due to the same reason, not being fed its native food.
A lot of animals and bugs are like this, using nature to help in its defense.
Now as for snakes and the questions, I simply ask them why they own their fuzzy animals.
Usually the answer is because they want to.
Same here.
another answer I give is that there are a lot that love animals, but have allergies to many and that reptiles are pretty much a great hypo-allergenic pet.
As for contact with them, well, you can say that you actually have more contact with your pets than they do seeing how you are always holding yours and theirs are usually at the end of a leash.

Personally, I admire their ability to thrive considering some of their physical drawbacks - they are unable to generate their own body heat and most of all, they don't have any legs/limbs. Yeah, they continue to thrive, consume proportionally massive prey, they have several different methods of locomotion and there are so many different species. Dogs are pretty much dogs. Their internal anatomy is pretty much the same and their general appearance is the same. Boid and colubrid anatomy (internal) is different, some snake have venom, some have hinged fangs, some are strictly arboreal, some are strictly burrowers, snakes are just bewildering in the all their different adaptions to all different environments.
THAT is what fascinates me.
