Miami is not such a bad place. I only had the image from TV, where they seem to concentrate on all the bad things... Let me say I moved here from Oakland, CA, which is supposed to have a horrible reputation. Yet, I lived there 4 years and never had a problem.
Like everywhere else, I think it has to do with where you are and at what time. There are neighbourhoods I would sugest against at 3AM. But then, aren't there in every city in the USA and in the world? There are "black" areas, Jamaican areas, redneck areas, cuban, puertorican and lots of Colombians. Somebody joked that the US starts in Ft. Lauderdale. In Dade it helps out to speak spanish.
Suburbs are like every other suburbs. Lots of manicured yards with children toys and lots of horrid traffic on the way to work in the AM. Yeah, a few more car stolen than maybe Niceville, FL, but not much worse than NYC, LA or SFO for that matter.
Drugs? Again, I am sure you can find them if you look for them. I don't find them and they don't come looking for me.
Miami is a lot nicer than the TV would lead you to believe, and a lot worse that Anytown, USA which only exists on TV also...
