I'm not sure if this a repeat, but tonight Tues. 7/9/02 @ 8:00 est Animal Planet is having a show called Big Constrictors. Its looks very interesting, I think they will try to discourage the keeping of large snakes though.

Well i think that people who dont like snakes arent going to watch it and not even get a snake. People who own large snakes know how cool they are and it wont effect them. But for those looking to get a snake they shouldnt start out with a large constrictor more like a ball. It looks awsome im seeing it. I just saw mib 2. I saw that advertised. It looks like it was almost named "KILLER BOAS STRANGLING YOUR CHILDREN!!!!" I am going to have to watch it tonight, but I have a felling that it will be full of half truths and misconceptions.

I agrre with bw that maybe 1 burm out of hundreds of thousands or millions kills a kid and the burm rep is killer. The only reason the kid was killed was because of an improperly contained snake so you cant blame it.

Animal planet is getting to be like the Enquirer. They are using "sensation" shows, and even the Pet Psychic (give me a break!!!). Now they also have this stupid "eXtreme" shows. And for the 4th of July they had a marathon of animal funny videos... ugh.
About the only things I watch there are the croc hunter and Jeff, and Nigel's Wild World.

Anything to boost ratings. It's just too bad that they do it at the expense of such beatiful snakes.

sorry but i dont necessarily agree with this statement. my female bci i got is my first snake and she couldnt be taken care of any better. i think a responsible person that researches these things should own whatever they want. i got a bci instead of a ball for numerous reasons, one being size. i just dont think a person should be discouraged from getting the snake they want because someone said they cant handle its size.

I don't consider a bci to be a "giant" anyway. They are mostly referring to things such as burms, retics and green anacondas. If a snake is too large for someone to handle and take care of, then NO, that person should NOT have it!

Just because someone SAYS they can't, that's not a reason - but if they really can't handle the size of the snake, that's a good reason right there not to get it!
Although yes, if someone said "You couldn't possibly handle a 12 foot snake!" and you disagree (especially from experience) then by all means, take care of the lil (huge?) guy ^_^ It's all about RESPONSIBLE guardianship of the animals.

Maybe I misunderstood you, but, I find something wrong with these statements. For example, I'm a responsible keeper (at least I hope I am) and I want a western diamondback rattlesnake. I've done quite a bit of research on them. As for the second statement, let's say I wanted a mainland locality retic, not dwarf insular locality. I live in a one-bedroom apartment, and I most definitely cannot handle an adult by myself, most adult humans cannot. So, I should go ahead and go out and get myself a western diamondback and a mainland retic. Regardless of the fact that one is venomous, and the other is rather large and I shouldn't be discouraged by its size, and I HAVE done my research on those snakes. I am a responsible keeper after all, so all the more reason to go out and get myself one of each, right?
Your statements do make sense...in a way. I'm giving you a hard time because I think these statements should be rephrased. The wrong person could read those statements and think, "Hey, they're right, I'll go and get one for myself! I can be responsible, right?"

yeah the way i phrased those statements could lead to some problems. i dont think by any means a retic, burm, rock python or anything of a comparable size should be someones first snake. its just that reaper said that a large constrictor shouldnt be anyones first snake. i strongly disagree unless hes talking about a green anaconda or something. i think redtails make a much better first snake than royals. from my experience redtails temperment, personality, and eating habits are much better than royals making them a much easier snake to keep. just my opinion.

Oh wow, a green anaconda is actually a good choice for a large constrictor? I had NO idea!
I do see your point about BCIs being better pets than balls. I disagree on the size thing, balls are much easier to house than BCIs size-wise. Both snakes are fairly similar in temperament and personality. Balls do tend to get nervous and curl up but that's no big deal, IMO. Just like there are some aggressive individual ball pythons, there are some aggressive boas. I do agree with you on the feeding thing, but that can be easily avoided by buying captive-bred balls, which isn't all too hard to find these days.
My two cents,
Bry
