Just got thids one in email from one of our membershere at RTB. You might want to look into this one...
<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> VERY smart thing to do!
For your information
Subject: SOCIAL SECURITY # AND CREDIT REPORTING
End distribution of your Social Security number etc.
CALL:1-888-567-8688
Just wanted to let everyone know who hasn'already heard, the four major credit bureaus in the US will be allowed, starting July 1, to release your credit info, mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to anyone who requests it. If you would like to 'opt out' of this release of your info, you can call 1-888-567-8688.
It only takes a couple of minutes to do, and you can take care of anyone else in the household while making only one call, you'll just need to know their social ecurity number. Once the message starts you'll want option #2 and then option #3 - Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a two year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for the third option which opts you out forever. I received their paperwork in the mail confirming my 'opting out'' within less than one week of making the call. PASS THIS MESSAGE ON TO ALL IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK AND YOUR PERSONAL FRIENDS who aren't
even on a pc........
</BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>

Don't believe everything you read, especially when it tells you to forward it to everyone you know. The FTC posted a consumer alert about this email hoax on their website.
Credit bureaus can release your credit information only to people with a legitimate business need, as recognized by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). For example, a company is allowed to get your report if you apply for credit, insurance, employment, or to rent an apartment.
In addition to the uses described above, lenders and insurers may use information in your credit file as a basis for sending you unsolicited offers. This is known as "prescreening." However, you have a right to opt out of these offers. The toll-free number - 1-888-567-8688 - is the "opt-out" line for the major credit bureaus for "prescreened" offers only.
The July 1 deadline relates to the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLB), which set July 1, 2001 as the deadline for financial institutions to give you notice of their privacy policies and a way for you to opt-out of some of their information-sharing practices. You may recall getting mailings or statement inserts recently from your financial institutions, creditors, insurance companies and brokerage firms about this. The July 1 date is not a deadline for consumers to do anything. In fact, consumers can contact their financial institutions anytime to opt-out under GLB.
The FTC strongly advises that you not give out personal information on the phone, through the mail or over the Internet unless you know who you're dealing with. Identity thieves may pose as representatives of banks, Internet service providers and even government agencies to get you to reveal your Social Security number, mother's maiden name, financial account numbers and other identifying information. Legitimate organizations with whom you do business have the information they need and will not ask you for it.

John, please se my reply. The info that I posted was taken verbatim from the FTC consumer alert about this hoax. The email that Lori received is a chain email that's been making the rounds of the internet as of late. It is full of misinformation & half-truths.

This one isn't actually a scam, per se. The phone number is legit, but all you can opt out of is pre-approved credit offers. A lot of these email hoaxes simply get started because the perpetratot wanted to see how many people would actually forward it- a "gee whiz" kind of thing. Others do it to bog down email servers with the traffic-each time you forward it, it takes up that much more space on the server.

Figured it was a hoax when I read it. I never bother with anything that says forward or some other crap. I believe the only chain letter I've forward to others in the last few years was 9/11 letter that had a nice poem and some other stuff remembering those who lost their lives.
