Below is part of an article published in a local newspaper.
After hearing various horror stories in this forum on this
subject my concerns are obvious.
<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> Carpet snakes and other pythons may soon become
"shelf items" in Queensland pet stores.
The State Government is considering allowing the commercial
sale of some reptiles to cater for exotic tastes in pets.
At present pythons, easternblue tounge lizards and saw-shelled turtles
can only be kept under special.....licences........
But Enviroment Minister Dean Wells said yesterday the rules might be
relaxed.
"It is possible that the commercial sale of a range of reptiles bred in captivity
may be permitted as a result of a review underway."he said.
A discussion paper would be released for public input before a decision was taken...... </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>
Once the paper is released I'll post more details and an e-mail address of the minister.
If some of you could take the time to write to him of your experinces & concerns I'm
sure they would be taken into account .I hope you can express as much passion on the welfare
of herps to the minister as you have previously on this forum.
Cheers ,Ben.

I would be more than happy to write the minister about the matter. Do you have an email or anything to get in touch with him?

Honestly if I were in Queensland it would be silly to buy a Carpet python rather than catch it since I'll be willing to bet they will probably be wild caught in the first place. Queensland and coastals is like Florida and gators.
it's always a tough call to make about petshops and herps. petstores are good because they are mainly responsible for bringing herps to us. now a days I feel it is much better to buy from breeders, but honestly, how many breeders would there be if there were no petstores to catch their interest as children? without petstores herptoculture would be an underground hobby, and how much less knowledge would be out there if there wasn't this many people keeping them? but for the most part I think most petshops take worst care of their herps than their consumers by a long shot . -Juggalo

Here's a scentence I edited from the same article.
<TABLE BORDER=0 ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=85%><TR><TD><font class="pn-sub">Quote:</font><HR></TD></TR><TR><TD><FONT class="pn-sub"><BLOCKQUOTE> Keeping unlicensed reptiles can lead to $225,000
fines and two years jail. </BLOCKQUOTE></FONT></TD></TR><TR><TD><HR></TD></TR></TABLE>
I admit that it does happen,Juggs, but it is rare & thats a pretty good Incentive
to buy one from someone down the road for $150 pay your
$35 licence fee & keep it legally.
At the moment herps aren't avail. in petstores here but I would hardly
call our Herptoculture 'underground'.
I'm not asking for you guy to write to Dean Wells to tell him it shouldn't
happen.I'm not totally against the idea myself.
Just to put across what your experiences have been and what you think would
need to be done for us to avoid having the same 'Petco.' type scenarios happen here.
Btw petco. is not a chain we have here atm.

man, it really sounds like you guys have it a lot more together down there. it would really be a shame to ruin that by involving petstores in the trade!
it's kinda like my quarrel with starbucks. yes, it's great coffee, and IMO they are resonsible for raising the standard for coffee in the US over the last few years, but they aren't a coffee house IMO, they are a corporation. I've seen a lot of local family owned coffee houses go under because starbucks will come set up shop overnight and take all the business of the local shop that's been there for years. so while it's good coffee, I don't like the corporation. like the pet industry I thank them for being a big part in sparking a lot of future breeders interests, but most of them are no good because of how they treat thear animals. was that enough rambling for ya?!?! lol sorry! I finally got hold of the ministers office ,
they will be giving me some info. on how to get my hands
on the discussion paper which will be a couple of days away.
I've got the ministers e-mail and will post it up with more details from the
disscussion paper so you all know the details of how they plan to set it up.
I hoping for lots of input from you guys to him ,don't let us down.

I might have been jumping the gun a bit.
I found out today the paper has not yet been approved
by cabinet and prob. won't be until August/Sept.
After that there is a 28 day window for public input.
My name is now on the mailing list to recieve a copy ASAP.
