It's the law, I had no choice
I am in the process of getting my wildlife removal permit for the state of Georgia. It requires a trapping license, a ton of reading, and a test. It also has some other requirements. I am required to keep a .22 LR weapon with me when I do removals. Since often I go on them directly from work, I basically have to keep it at all times by law. Good excuse to get a new gun
I just went to the shop to price them out since I did not want to spend alot of money on a 22. But when you comeacrosss a good deal, you have to go for it. A Ruger 10/22 with a Ramline folding stock and a nice 9x scope for $125.
By far, one of the toughest 22s I have seen. I still need a new mag (the standard 10 rounder just won't do). Hopefully I will get a chance to sight it in this weekend and put a couple hundred round through it to see how it shoots. I need to find a nice case for it. The folding stock makes it much easier to keep around since I have to have it often, even if it is a snake call where there is no chance needing it. The law is the law imp:

A .22 would not be my weapon of choice.
Why do you need to carry one with you when you go out on calls?

If your only choice is a .22 caliber, then the Ruger 10/22 is an excellent choice for a rifle. It's a very accurate and reliable gun.
If you think you might ever had to depend on it for defense (rabid dog running at you, etc)...I'd take off the scope or better yet, get see-through mounts. A scope is not good for closeup work if you know what I mean.
I'd be more likely to carry a 22 pistol in a holster because a rifle is a bit cumbersome while carrying other equipment into a field, building, etc. But then again, a Ruger 10/22 and a pistol would make a good combination! Now you have an excuse for 2 guns! Hey....it's the Law!!!

They require it in case you have to dispatch a trapped animal. So most shots would be a point blank basically. The only choice is a 22 LR. I am also required to get a Chokestick.

The Ruger 10-22 is an excellent rifle, you'll be pleased with it for many years.

Then I would suggest you get see-thru mounts or get rid of the scope all together. Just MHO.

<shrug> not much aiming required at point-blank.
