My buddy who works at the SPCA has a .22 and whenever he gets to an animal in disstress he just shoots it in the ear.
He came across an injured horse, and he shot atleast 6 rounds off in the horse, with a .27 or summink in that line, and the horse still didn't die. Just imagine what a .22 would do... yes, nothing.
I don't have faith in those guns. Only time I shoot with a .22 is when we are having target practice or comeptitions. Wouldn't use it for self defence nor to try put an animal outta it's missery, unless you can get up close and personal with the animal.

The best weapon is one that has spent a lot of time at the range. It has had plenty of rounds put through it, regardless of cost. As with most things in life, if ya can't afford it, then why do you really need it.
Recently I bought a late '90s model of the S&W 686 .357 mag that hadn't ever been fired. It was stainless and I paid $275 for this gem.
A weapon that doesn't have much range time combined with a human with the same time, is not much more than a few pound rock, or a stick that normally won't break when hitting a skull.
Using a shotgun as home protection is a real mistake. At close range, a shotgun doen't have the "scatter gun" effect as shown on tv. Neither does it have the maneuverability in the hallway, etc... Take one to the range like I did with my neighbor and it changes the train of thought fast. The other thing with a home protection weapon is it gets skipped real often when it comes to cleaning, oiling and taking proper care of the weapon, let alone the ammo aging and getting close to it's shelf life. A disaster in the waiting...
We have to take a test to drive, I think a test before you can purchase a firearm would be a step in the right direction. I carry several CCW's from several states and sat through almost twenty hours to get them.
A very good website for gun laws is http://www.packing.org

Well, sighted it in this weekend. Not bad considering that I have never owned a rifle. Target at 60 Yards (180 feet) with 10 shots of CCI Velocitor rounds. A Nickel for comparison.
I am pleased.

I have some guns. What and where I keep them...I ain't making public If you ever see them, you are likely doing something here you shouldn't be and probably will have had a better day prior to this particular one lol.
Whoever said a .22 won't do any damage is wrong. Put a .22 round in someone's ribcage sometime. It bounces around in there and makes a mess out of things pretty bad. Lots of people have been killed with them.

Not bad at all BW. Especially since, as you said, you haven't ever owned a rifle. I am almost the opposite since I have only owned a couple handguns and much prefer a rifle to anything.
And Brett, I agree totally about the damage that a .22 will do. I would rather get shot with a .357 or .44 than a .22LR. The large, high velocity rounds will go right through while the .22 could go in at the hip and come out you neck with a little blender action on the way through.
Why do you think that the military uses the tumbling .223 as it's primary round?? Very much damage on the way through.
