During the French Revolution, A French scientist named Antoine Lavoisier was codemned to death by way of the Guillotine. Being the great scientist that he was and wanting to make the best he could of a really rotten situation, he decided to make his death a scientific experiment. His theory was that since all main sensory organs are on the head that the head could remain consious for a while after decapitation so he had an assistant promise to get up front and watch his head after it was chopped off and he would blink his eyes for as long as he could before fading on out. No one doubts the validity of this story because the experiment was repeated a few times by others but the details are etchy as to whether he blinked 15 or 20 times. More current scientific data suggests that depending on the health of the individual and the circumstances of the decapitation, awareness lasts at least 5 seconds or possibly more and life remains for 13-15 seconds. Decapitation is the means of death but not the ultimate cause. lack of blood enriched with oxygen and other important nutrients going to the brain is why you die. Animals with slower metabolisms and especially those that need very little oxygen such as birds, fish and reptiles can live and be consious for way way too long after decapitation, ranging from several minutes to several hours. Many of us have cleaned catfish and have watched in horror as the mouth and gills are still gasping even the next day. This is largely written off as residual nerve firing but...I don't think so. I think the brain just isn't dead yet. There are also cases of decapitated rattlesnakes actually latching on and biting people that pick up the severed heads...ain't karma great?

I did that once with the CO2..I guess the rat wasnt quite dead and later when I went in the freezer the rat was moving around..Pretty gross.....Thats why I would rather let someone else do the killing..I guess there really isnt a good way to die short of lethal injection....Dont they use gas chambers like CO2 to gas dogs at the dog pound? I recently thought I saw a story of a dog that survived the chamber and was later adopted out...

Exactly!!!! That's why in a shooting situation, the heart can be completely devastated, but the bad guy can still kill you because he has about 10-15 seconds of oxygenated blood left in his system. Imagine what a doped up bad guy with a knife can do in 15 seconds.

A vet at my work actually was involved in a study where they cut a window in the bottom part of a turtle shell, right over the heart, and plexiglassed over the whole. They decapitated the turtle and watched his heart beat for 3 days. So if the heart is still beating I'm sure the brain has to have some kind of sensory thing going on......

This is very interesting... gruesome... but interesting
The thing about the turtle is interesting, too.
Kind of makes you rethink the humanity of decapitation, huh?
