So Excited!!!
Yesterday I met with the Phoenix Herp Society in regards to start doing some volunteer work for them. I found out SO MANY cool things about them.
1) they are they ONLY licensed rescue shelter/operation in AZ (and several surrounding states) for crocodillians.
2) they also have a zoo license.
3) unfortunately, they are getting far too many alligators (and other species) to be able to build enclosures fast enough for them.
4) they have several different types of desert tortiose, soft shelled turtles, and red-eared sliders (close to 40 of these)
5) of course they also have green iguanas & rhino iguanas, and several different types of monitor lizards.
6) they also have hots (snakes)
7) they have (and cannot release) approx. 20 gila monsters.
Now, the more amazing thing. I am happy that I'm NOT a member of the AZ State Herp Society. Apparently they are on the "bad" list with AZ Game, Fish & Wildlife. Because they (the Herp Society) are more concerned with membership they often end up with members that are bringing in illegal animals to the state of AZ. They do not regulate any of they members or functions and have gotten into trouble more than once.
So, to say the least, I'm going to start volunteering time to help care for animals that they currently have in their shelter. AND as I become more experienced I'll be able to go out to resecues, to include hots when I'm capable. Now that's exciting!
