thought on PETA?
Okay, i'm sure there have been threads like this but i haven't seen any in my quick glance of the site.
Personally, I think they are an abomination.
Not ALL...but many PETA supporters i've met are involved with this group for very wrong reassons.
Forget the supporters though, my main thing is the people in this organization. Their views on some stuff is very warped, half of them are very hypocritical and some big wigs in the organization have even used meds and/or procedures that are against everything they are for (yet it is totally okay because they "need their own lives to fight for animal rights").
I'm all for animals rights but PETA gets NO support from me.
I mean, for the love of all that is holy, PETA says you cann have animals for pets...yet there are pictures of them around with their own pets.
Has anyone seen that show Penn & Teller have on HBO?
They did a VERY good piece on PETA in their first season. In addition to being informative it is very funny as well.
Usually people are either very much for or very much against this organization.
So, how do all of you feel about PETA?

I HATE them..... and to think that for a small amount of time I wanted to join them.......
You should read the histories about tax exemptions, and how the REALLY spend their MILLIONS of dollars..... they all go for huge advertisement campains..... they never helped to build or support a single animal shelter.
And that campaign comparing chickens with the jews in the holocaust???? They went TOO FAR.....
They are people haters, not animal lovers......
Those folks got "Animal Rights" from Singer and totally twisted it.
Did you know they support the campaign to kill Pit Bulls???? Their main director, I don't remember her name, she hates Pits because on bit her, so among all dogs on earth, she thinks this breed should go to heck....... well, they happen to be one of the most amazing dogs I ever had. And they pass pretty well the ATTS test: http://www.atts.org/stats1.html
PETA......

PETA is just a cover for a larger moronic money laundering front.
Well not really but them being tax exempt is just the straw that broke my back.

jiboia, when i was younger i was almost suckered into supporting them as well until i did research on them.
Penn & Teller's show goes into the way the spend their money and they also talk on the "holocaust on your plate" campaign. Personally, i think it's king of funny that they would go THAT far to try to shove their ideologies down people's throats to get money.
Mary Beth Sweetland, vice president of PETA, was the major one i was talking about in my last post.
she's a "type a" diabetic and uses insulin every day, which is developed from medical testing on dogs.
she's quoted as saying "i do not consider myself a hypocrite. i need my life to fight for the rights of animals" and that her meds "still contain some animal products"!!!
Then Ingrid Newkirk (i believe the president of PETA) says that "sometimes the only kind option for some animal is to put them to sleep forever." and they kill many animals themselves. one year they killed 2/3 or the animals they've rescued. To quote that Penn & Teller show, "PETA kills animals while attacking people who kill animals"
i had no idea about the pit bull thing though.
that kind of REALLY enrages me, as pits are one my my life's passions. possibly the most misrepresented dog breed in history.
they are jsut a product of their environment and it's the owner's fault, not the animal's.
my rescued pit/american bulldog mix is one of the best dogs i've ever had and her purebred (neutered) pit boyfriend has a better temperment and is more well behaved than she does.
i was bit in the face by a pit when i was younger ... that dog was owned by a drug dealer... and it onlly made me realize how much of a problem there is with bad owners.
ugh. why did i start this topic? lol PETA pisses me off.

Yep, That's Ingrid Newkirk I was talking about. She defends the banning of the breed, and she thinks there are so many "better" dogs in shelters to be adopted.
Again, I had countless dogs during my life, and my dear Bari is at the top of my list as one of the most amazing, together with a Boxer I had.
I think there should be some laws to prohibit back yard breeders and those "dog farms" from breeding, but please, keep the serious breeders of this wonderful dogs.
Yes, they are a problem in shelters. It's so sad. I agree they are the most misunderstood dogs on Earth. This is a very touchy subject for me. Here's a letter defending them from the PETA ban:
http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petb...etaletter.html
And if you feel like crying, here's a typical TRUE history of a Pit Bull:
http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petb...s/rustart.html
There are many folks already working against PETA, fighting against their tax exemptions and such. Ingrid still wants to ban Pits, but she changed the words in her letter against Pits, now she is "softer", that ******
PETA also supports ALF, a main terrorist group in USA that loves to blow up laboratories...

I got jumped on a bit for calling PETA a terrorist group but I stand firmly behind my statement. If they support and fund a terrorist group, then they too are terrorists. After all...bin laden didn't come to America and blow up our buildings. He funded and supported, trained and encouraged. Just because someone is clever enough to get someone else to do their dirty work for them, does not make them any less guilty.
PETA has too much involvment with the animal shelters as it is. I really don't want to see them building any. They would just get more animals in to destroy. They already kill at least 80% of what they get. They claim they can't find good homes and I'm pretty certain that the reason they can't find good homes is because they probably will only adopt to vegan left wing nut jobs like themselves who also don't believe in domestic animals. kind of a catch 22. The whole mess where they got busted for dumping dead dogs in grocerystore dumpsters not long ago, made me mad and laugh at the same time. Newkirk was "astonished" and condemned the actions and voiced her outrage...but in the next breath said that PETA will be picking up the attorney fees and court costs for the defendants...huh?
BTW..I don't see how it's possible for anyone who keeps snakes for pets to support PETA. Some people that support them tend to justify their support by saying "well you don't have to agree with everything they do...it's the idea etc etc etc...sorry folks. That's an extremely dangerous stance to take. It's wise to know what all these people are into before you jump aboard. Hitler had some pretty good ideas too and not everything he stood for was evil...so he put together a pretty good little following and gained power. And those who supported and even those who didn't were forced into accepting his whole package. Same with PETA. Please do not empower these morons unless you agree with their NUMBER ONE idea of phasing out all human consumption of animal products of any kind and all pets, livestock of course...no more horse riding, nothing. They don't want these animals turned loose either...they want them destroyed. Because life with humans is worse than being dead. Now, if any of you have a cat or dog or any reasonably intelligent pet at home. Can you look in your puppies eyes and think for a second...naaa I'm sure he'd way rather be dead than chewing on my sock.

"I'm all for animals rights but PETA gets NO support from me."
You know, I agree wholeheartedly. There's no need for silly hyperbole, or righteous indignation. The above statement sums it up perfectly. Telling herpers how hypocritical PETA is, is (besides being a little ironic) a little like telling herpers how bad exotic pet legislation is, or how CITES stops them from keeping whatever they want, or how USFW is out to get them. It's going to provoke a tidal wave of "Yeah!" responses on a message board somewhere, but thats about it. All heat and no light.
This is America, and people (still) have the right to organize into whatever kind of group they want to, under any set of ideals I find goofy or misguided (charges of Terrorism that the federal government apparently refuses to follow up non-withstanding). PETA is not going to accomplish their stated goal, much less some hidden nefarious one. Herpers themselves (and the ammo they provide to USFW) are a way bigger threat to my ability to keep herps legally. I guess those things are a little harder to demonize though. =/

I certainly agree with JuliusSqueeser on this one and I take back my complain about their lack of attention to building shelters...
BUT
I totally disagree with "TheOtherAndy":
"Telling herpers how hypocritical PETA is, is (besides being a little ironic) a little like telling herpers how bad exotic pet legislation is, or how CITES stops them from keeping whatever they want, or how USFW is out to get them. Well, a lot of people still don't know half of the PETA crap, and it is very important in my opinion that they DO know. Although I admire any specific work in helping the herp folks, I think you are being a little selfish towards the whole pet community. Yes, there is light telling people all about them... you make people angry so they move to stop PETA, hopefully to close down PETA someday.

Herpers can't be bothered to organize enough to stop their own animals from being legislated away. Heck, half of us can't be bothered to take care of our animals properly (and thats a generous figure). Giving an opinion is pretty easy, especially on the internet. What are you doing to "stop PETA" besides talking? And wouldn't that energy be better suited to doing something positive for the HERP community? I understand you don't have the same things on your plate as we do up here, but in the states herpers have a much more important things to be up in arms about.

What am I doing? Well, not as much as I wanted, but I really stopped some people from donating money to them and supporting them. I wish I was a lawyier so I could do more, but I don't know what else I can do since I don't have the power. I'm open to suggestions, though.
Well, don't be bothered then... too bad I don't have that little tale in my computer anymore, about the little mouse who went to ask for help to the other farm animals. It goes more or less like this, the mouse asked for help because the farmer wanted to kill him or something like that. None of the animals wanted to help, they all denied (the snake, the cow, the chicken, the pig, etc). In the end that denial ends up affecting everyone after the snake bit the farmer's wife. She got killed because she was in the house trying to eat the mouse... then the wife was sick and the farmer killed the chicken to make soup for her... and so on
Cute, isn't it?
