I hope you like it. I worked at a pet store for awhile. I thought I could at least make a difference. Maybe I did... but I only scratched the surface.
It's hard to see new shipments of animals come in. It's hard to see the sick room full of sick and dying animals. It's hard to recommend vet treatment and have your boss glare at you through his pocketbook and refuse to take them to the vet until it's too late to save them. It's hard to see people buy the wrong pets against all advice, then bring them back dead or dying a week later.
Of course, it's good to know you made a difference to someone... that giving them the correct information saved their pet's life. But it's only a small consolence.
I sincerely hope that your store is different. I hope it's one of the good ones that takes critters from local breeders, keeps them in tip top condition, and only sells to the thoroughly educated pet owner. If that's the case, I'm sure you'll be great. But for the most part, I'd have to say that petstores are no place for animal lovers.
Being an animal lover yourself, though, I'm sure you'll draw your own conclusions. I quit because I realized that by working in the industry, I was contributing to the problem, no matter how many people I got to listen to me.
Sorry if that was a bit... depressing. Don't let me bring you down, just be aware of what you're up against.

Well, luckily this petstore isn't like that, the owner loves animals too, think he's gay?, yeah well I've helped many people make right choices not buying from swapmeets, but stores that have healthy animals or breeders. I know how it is with many pet stores, but come on this is in Palm Springs(if you didn't know full of happy people ).

Nice work. That would be a fun job to go to when you get to be around something you love. Good Luck!

When I first got to Las Vegas I knew It would be a while before I got work in my profession so I got a job at a pet shop. I got fired in the first month. My job was to sell, clean, feed and water.
When it came to selling they loved me cause every sale was an up-sell since I made sure the new Iguana owner bought lights, heaters and stuff. I recommend this to you. The up-sell helps you keep your job and makes for healthy pets.
But…the issue was my idea of cleaning water was to take out the bowls and wash them in the sink each day with soap. Once a week use bleach or something like that. This took too much time so the owner told me to just re-fill. I told her of the germs and bacteria and problems from dirty water bowls and they didn’t care. I STILL cleaned each bowl each day and got fired when they caught me. lol
I love fighting authority!!!!! That shop is now gone....

Well, I hope they don't fire me for trying to keep the animals healthy, I make sales or help customers, clean cages, change water and food, and all that jazz, but mostly for the reptile unless the boss tells me otherwise.
