thanks everyone!!!
Wow, ever since I've become a member of this site I've learned so much and have been able to pass it on. A friend of mine (well her son) owns a corn snake. They had been feeding it a couple of mice. But the other day she took my advice and gave it a single small rat instead. She said, and I quote, "he seemed so much happier with the rat".
So thanks "guys" for helping pass on good info for my friends here at home.

What? I thought cornsnakes ate corn...geez...no wonder I can never get them to eat anything! I tried gibblets, whole kernel, and on the cob. When those failed, I tube fed cream corn but it didn't seem to make him happy so I let him go to catch his own corn...grrrr :P

I'm more of a boa guy, but I always thought corns were more of a "multiple prey item" kind of snake.
Either way, I'm gonna move this to "Just talk" or "Colubrids". =)

Yes and no pathy...In the wild they are opportunist feeders just like anything else. Crawling around barns or where ever they crawl around, they happen up on a nice rat...if it's big enough to hold them over awhile, great but very often they will stumble into nests and wipe out a litter of pups. They handle being fed either way just fine.

Cool. I just seem to remember telefrag giving some reason that you should feed a corn multiple smaller prey items over one large item. I could be wrong though... that was from a long time ago. LOL

You're so funny! Course I also prefer my boa. More "meat" on her. (no, I don't plan on eating her. Although hubby's dad has threatened to throw her into the smoker)

It doesn't matter. Most snakes are geared to handle what they happen to find. God doesn't sit up there and toss down appropriate sized feeders to all the snakes every 7-14 days. Sometimes they find one just right. sometimes what they find is way too big. Sometimes they have to deal with several small items. Some snakes can't handle multiple prey items well though. Rainbow boas, emeralds, and a few others often don't hold down multiple smaller prey items. Then there are things like Tiger ratsnakes that seem to doo much better when fed 6-8 smaller items than they do when gulping down one huge item...probably just the way their metabolism is set up after eons of raiding nests for a living.
