Started reading an old thread before realizing how old it was - but hope my experience might help someone. (yes - I'm supposed to be working but am taking a break) This will probably only help in areas where owning a snake is not banned.
While looking for an apartment and getting the pet question I simply replied "reptiles" but when they asked specifically what kind I told them. The response here was great . . . the 2 places where I got a weird look I told them if needed I would get a letter from my doctor that they are my therapy animals.

Yup - they can't do much if they are considered "therapy animals" and you can get your doctor to write a letter stating that. Work the system - it's not that hard. If I still had my cat (or dog) would not have had to pay any pet deposit or pet rent either if they were my "therapy animals".
I know some places are much more restrictive so check out the laws in your state/location regarding this 'exception' for animals. My apartment manager was in my apartment yesterday with the maintenance man and the subject of pets was brought up and told her I had snakes. Lucky me - she was so interested she had to see them and thought it was cool I had them. Fortunately for me she has no personal issues with snakes either. hehe
Anyway - just some food for thought and hope this will help someone.
