Unhappy No local herp society

Well, after much searching and phone calls there is no local herp society for me. The three closest options are three hours into LA, two hours into San Bernardino, or two hours into San Diego. If I had one of those days off, I'd make the drive, but they meet on stupid days. They used to have an orange county chapter, but nobody wanted to run the thing. People...... I was looking forward to going on rescues and meeting other herpers.

Justin,
Where in NC are you located? There are quite a few of us in NC. Also, there is an NC Herp Society, along with other support organizations. Check 'em out!

You can start a Herp society with only about 3 people willing to give time and a little money..
.
Make posters (a nice photo of a snake helps) inviting people to come to a meeting, no more than about 90 days in advance.. put them up in Pet Shops, schools, wherever. As time gets closer put a small ad in the newspaper (usually, they'll do this free). If you get 10 or more people at the first go (easy) then plan the next meeting.
.
These clubs are easy to start and fun.. the problem is keeping your enthusiasm over time and finding new people who are willing to give to the effort.. followers and people who want to talk herps are a dime a dozen! But finding and keeping that core of motivated members who will keep the fire going is the tough part.
.
Gus.
