Stupid, stupid computer!
For the second time in the last 6 months or so, I had to wipe my hard drive last night. Stupid windows machine. Got an update notification, so I updated. Told me I needed to restart, so I restarted. Wouldn't restart- got almost there and gave me error messages saying there was a file missing. Put in the windows CD and did a repair. Restarted, and it was even worse- got the the screen that asks if you want to restart in safe mode, normal windows xp mode, or with the last working settings. Tried all three, and it kept coming back to the same screen. Tried the repair again- same thing. Finally gave up and formatted the hard drive. I know, drastic step, but I was tired of fighting with it, and didn't have anything on it I couldn't get back. (Thank goodness for my RTB photo album!) I think I'm going to buy a Mac!

Was it the Service Pack 2 update? That has ben known to screw up computers sometimes when people get it from the net. Luckily I got it on disc, so I don't have to worry about it.

NAh, I got that one a while back. This was something little, didn't take long to install. I don't know if this was related to the update or if it was something else lurking that just hadn't shown up because I hadn't restarted in a while.

Problem #1. it's Micro$oft
what i had to do with mine because I run XP Pro Corporate is we update SP 1 & 2 and then disable automatic updates...i had the same problem with one particular update and gave me a ton of problems..
Karnis check out http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and download Ad-Aware it catches virus and adware stuff if you dont have it and if that doesnt work check out Pandasoftware.com I've used panda in the past and i had never had problems with it whatsoever

I use Adaware, Spybot, and Spysweeper for finding adware.

Ad Aware doesn't catch viruses. It find stuff that gets downloaded to your computer while your one the net. The stuff gets downloaded, and keeps running in the background w/out you even know it. Adware can be a gateway for viruses to get into your computer though. If your wanting virus scan software you have to buy it.
