snake suggestions?
a prof of mine is interested in getting his daughter a snake...apparantly shes afraid of dogs but loves snakes...go figure..lol. anyways, she must be about 11 and hes looking for a species that is for the most part docile and not too nippy. i of course thought ball python but they can be finicky eaters....any other suggestions?

Corns are an excellent choice. Gophers aren't bad but can get pretty large. A California Kingsnake could be a good choice too. The plus side for the corns is the incredible selection of color morphs...practically endless!

I would say get an established ball because if she wants to hold it the little and in many cases adult corns are very squirmy, and if it's her first snake she might not know how to handle a very fragile, squirmy snake, which could lead to inadvertanly injuring the snake. Just my 2 cents.

Both my girls started out with corns...they are wonderful snakes even for advanced herpers...but for first time herpers there is no better choice (but that's just my opinion).

Are corns like kingsnakes in temperment? I think they're a little skittish as youngsters though they are great eaters. Balls have great temperment but as already said can be finicky eaters.
My choice, which my wife big time agrees with, is that a spotted python makes a great first animal. They're eating machines (at least ours is and that's what I've heard about others) they're not overly skittish and they don't grow as large as most of the "red tails". That's my 1 1/2 cents.
