What do you do when you have to get up and go somewhere? do you have family, or friends closeby that watch your herps, do you board them..... I know there are many military herpers here with a whole bunch of animals, so what does everybody do when they get deployed, or get an overseas assignment? -Juggalo

I don't fall into that category BUT we do have flnavyguy who is currently deployed over seas atm. his herps are being housed by Karen while he's away though. BTW Karen is an RTB member who he's gonna owe big time when he gets back lol. Seriously, with a great community of people like this i am sure that someone would step up to help out if need be.
I would think that the "convict" situation would not parlay for much choice in the matter though also.

this is the only thing that stops me from getting all the reptiles I want in my job, there's a good chance of moving sometimes, and I wouldn't know what do with all of them. I don't have any I would ever want to sell. I've had to move a few times in the past, my sister watched my snake for a year then. but that's when I had only 1 BCI. don't know if she would be up to watching all the herps I've aquired since. just trying to plan a head, just in case. -Juggalo

All of my stuff is with joerissa. They keep them for me and when I have to go somewhere they already have them. I sometimes have some in my barracks room. When I go to the field or deploy I just take them down to stay with them. I know its not much help but its what I do.

I am in the army....but I do not move around a lot.
But if anything happens to me...I did leave the wife a note in my insurance file folder.
ALL my reptiles go to Mark Kennedy of MarksHerps.com
But If I am just temporarily going somewhere.....we have tons of people here willing to look after our reptiles.
check around for someone close to you.
If you can't find anyone.....I am willing to look after them for you.

another idea is to join your local herp society--lots of great reptile lovers that would probably help you out if need be.
worst case scenario, you could contract a pet sitting agency for short time periods.

For especially short deployments (under one week), my snakes fend for themselves. If I'm reasonably close (such as my deployments to Wright-Patterson AFB) during longer jaunts, I return home every few days to check on things. If the deployment lasts longer than a week, and I am not able to return home every few days, I have someone local that can check on things for me.
There were times when I wasn't able to coordinate someone taking care of my snakes until I made it to Ramstein. Rather, I should say that I wasn't able to send him my keys until I was at Ramstein, since we had already planned for such an event.

I am goin on the boat in three days and I just told my girlfriend that if she loves me that she will come over every day and check on Jamie my 6 1/2ft jcp she said that she would...
yes!!!! Ill only be gone for 6 weeks. And my girlfriend Kelly knows exactly how I want her to take care of my python... she is such a good girl....
but Ive thought of this in the future and if Kelly whasnt here I would of had to ask my
Father,
a friends wife,
another snake owner localy that I know,
and as a last resort the Reptile room (per store) They charge $3.00 a day...
but I could never do that my Jamy likes her 100gal tank and her heating settup and whell she is just spoiled with me... thats why I am just glad that Ive got my g~friend!!!

Hey Dana... I wouldnt put too much faith in Herp Societies. They may look good on the outside but sometimes are totally different once inside. My local herp society is a great example of that. I have personally seen the collections of a few of the board members of our local herp society and the ones that I saw have some of the most disgusting husbandry practices and keep their animals in filth. Hence the reason I've never joined.

Karen,
Sorry to hear that. Our herp society is great...It is headed by people involved in the bio dept at the university of new mexico (herpetology), and we have breeders, educators, researchers, and enthusiasts involved. I just wish I had time to go to meetings more often. I do pet sitting trades with a couple people in the group.
But, I'm sure there are some questionable keepers everywhere...
