Petco may be the worst at this time - but I have seen conditions equally appalling at PetSmart and other privately run pet shops. *sigh* My daughter used to work at PetSmart - most of the time they are better then Petco - but they are losing ground in some stores. Guess it's up to all of us where we take our business and what stores that supports.

That is some scary #$%^&#$%^&#$%^&#$%^&! My brother worked in a pet store in NC for a while and was so overwhelmed by the mistreatment that while he worked there and even after he quit he would smuggle animals out of the store and find them good homes before they died. Most was just plain neglect. They had a huge rack system for snakes and lizards that when we looked in the tubs about 20% of the animals were dead or dieing and almost all of them had empty water bowls that had obviously been that way for at least a week. I have seen other pet stores here in San Antonio that I just had to leave quickly before I said or did something that would land me in jail. I get very emotional about animal neglect or abuse. It usually leads to me acting badly though and doing things I am ashamed of later. But hey, I just can't stand to see any animal suffer.

While I too hate petco and most other pet stores, what do you guys think about some other things you are supporting, (maybe not all of you because I don't know your beliefs)
What about the IAM's testing dogs and cats that are locked up from birth to death, most never get to see the light of day?
Or your hamburger that a cow lived its life in a small kennel only to have its throat cut and hung by its back legs one day?
Or the milk you drink, where they incemenate a female cow? Do you know where those babies go? Straight onto a truck and into a veal factory!
Or the fast food chicken, where KFC pays companies to boil their chickens alive?
or the fur coat you wear? Ever think of what happened to that little fox or mink?
Or the listerine that you buy that is tested on animals? How would you like to have that poured in your eyes and nose, when you dont even have eyelids? seems a bit pointless to test that, as humans have tear glands and eye lids..
and when people think that testing make up on animals is like putting lipstick on a rabbit, no its smearing lipstick in a rabbits eyes.
just something to think about, talking smack about petco on a forum isnt going to do anything, direct action = liberation
and anyone that is "enviromentally friendly".. ha thats a joke, if you support the factory farm business your supporting the worst thing for the world, bar none. The massive amounts of animal waste on this planet is really draining it.
and for some reason I just cant believe that whatever god you may have wants you to treat animals this way? Last I checked animals were supposed to be held sacred, or at least equal!
Myself, I don't eat or use any animal products, no meat fish poultry eggs milk or any byproduct therein.
just something to ponder

Easy,PetSmart doesn't sell as much animals as Petco does, and that means more money for Peta.Has anyone ever seen the petshop in Real World San Diego, when frankie got that burm? That is a place that really needs to be shut down.

I like this guy
I feel the same way,
while im not vegan anymore , Im still a vegetarian, and will be for the rest of my life (going on 15 years now)
one thing someone told me once that most people
"think nothing of the suffering which they spare themselves the sight"
Which is true,
someone walks into a pet store and see empty waterbowls in animal cages and are disgusted, yet they go to mcdonalds and eat their .99 big mac that was likely made from imported beef that was raised on clear cut rainforest.
human existence is full of strange ironies.
and we are all guilty in some way or another.

Well I eat meat! Red meat is what made our brains bigger and smarter. And I have known quite alot of vegetarians, vegans and microbiotic's and I have never seen one that looked healthy. You guys always look like you would topple over in a 10mph wind. I am not saying that I dislike people who are vegetarians etc..., but come on now, meat is what got us out of the stone age and into the tool age. I don't like the practices of the big meat plants or animal testing any more than you do. So don't think you have the morals market cornered just because you don't eat animal products. Most of the meat that is eaten in my house is deer, and I am sure you have many bad things to say about me on that one. I kill my own meat, grow my own vegetables etc.. and am pretty self sufficient when need be. But grow up! people who eat meat aren't bad, just smart!

To each their own. I still say if we didn't eat meat then all the animals we weren't eating would be in direct competition with us for vegetation. We would eat up all the plants and then die from lack of oxygen. And the methane gas that the cows give off that peta already complains about would just get worse because the cow population would go totally off the chart if we weren't eating them. The milk issue is just rediculous. First of all, veal is made in a much more humane way than it was 40 years ago...a lot has changed. I still won't eat veal or lamb though just because I don't like the thought of eating a baby. But blaming milk for veal? c'mon! That's nuts. If you don't like veal boycott veal. Boycotting milk to stop veal is like boycotting asphalt to stop drunk drivers...
I try to invision a peta led world and all I can see in the end is an image much like Ethiopia where we are all sitting half naked and barefooted in the mud eating mush out of a wooden bowl with our fingers. If everyone went peta today...that's what tomorrow would look like. Most every business would shut down. Just take away milk and look at what all goes byebye besides the dairys...kellogs, post, ...bah it doesn't matter. PETA has already stepped on so many big toes over rediculous far fetched matters that fewer and fewer people are listening to their rants anymore other than people like me that read the newsletters to get a little chuckle in. When they went after the producers of "Bird Man From Alcatraz" for feeding a live maggot to a bird...violating the maggots rights....what? After that crap, it became obvious that they are nothing but a bunch of blowhards that KNOW they will never change the world or stop milk or meat or leather but by screaming about it, they get funds pouring in from the vegans. If the vegans were sending me money, I'd scream against meat and milk too...but I'd still be a consumer.
And PLEASE show me a vegan that has been a vegan from birth that looks even remotely healthy. Everytime I have requested this, I get a list of vegan atheletes or actors that are all nice and buff....but got that way while still eating meat, not tofu.

AdamX...do you keep reptiles other than iguanas? Are we all going to burn for feeding rodents to our snakes? crickets to our geckos? or does your snake eat tofu and cabbage?...btw no animal waste is near as toxic as our own...oh that's right...PETA is against us breeding too! So keep that in mind. If PETA had everything their way, you wouldn't be here to promote them anyway. I agree with a few things peta spouts off about but there is so much I don't agree with that I am alienated from supporting anything to do with them.

I dont know if eating meat makes someone smarter, I know LOTS of vegetarians, and they are all pretty bright and aware people (some with IQ's over 130), yet I know lots of people that eat meat, and most are fairly smart, but alot of them are pretty dumb.
Does it have anything to do with their diet? I doubt it.
If you raise your own meat, or kill your own food and its done in a responsible , and sustainable manner, than good for you. More people should live that way.
I have no issues with hunting for food, and not wasting anything.
Thats after all the way it was meant to be, but large scale factory farming is far from natural, and supporting it is just being .... well... completely ambivalent to the needs of the world, and ignoring the consequences that will develop in the future from that type of industry.
Im by no means a big person, but it would take alot more than a 10mph wind to blow me over
to each their own, some of us choose to live life with our eyes shut, some choose to open them and see the horrid reality that our current diets can become.
Just look at the US for example, how many people are overweight?
Gluttony is one of the deadly sins... and even the most devout christians ive known are guilty of it.
and trust me, they didnt get that big eating vegatables.
meat is a natural part of the human diet, that I will never deny.
But a double burger with cheese is far from natural.
As far as snakes eating rodents.
My personal take on that is, snakes have NO choice, people do.
The environmental impact of the raising of rodents for snake food is probably inconsequential in its current state.
My choices for not eating meat are strictly environmental, and semi-political, not necessarly for health reasons.
but , I have hardly any body fat, a very low cholestrol level (I cant recall the exact number off hand), my heart rate is perfect (per my dr), I rarely get sick (aside from headaches from time to time).
If you call that unhealthy.... then I guess I need to re-evaluate what health really is.
But , I wont go judging anyone for their dietary choices... unless of course they ask me to.
that being said.
BOOGERS!

c'mon
dont be ridiculous.
PETA isnt against people breeding, they are against OVER population.
call me crazy, but do you think there are too many people in this world, and if we continue at the same rate, that the world will be able to support the global populace?
I think alot of people mis-understand PETA, ARM, and other "organizations" true intentions.
But then again, why pay attention and really find out if you will only discover that just about everyone is doing something they disagree with.
Welcome to the human condition.

Regardless of all of the arguements and beliefs it all comes down to what JS said...to everyone each his or her own.
In a way I do support some of PETA's claims of animal abuse and stuff like that. I hate animal testing, always have always will. but I will do what I need to do to survive. If i have to eat meat, then I say eat and be merry. What i don't approve of is how they are totally pro animal rights.
What really constitutes as "ethical treatment of animals" ?
all it is to me is basically doing the most humane thing to treat them. But if people can not respect my views or opinions then they're not human, they're ignorant. I will respect other people's opinions and their beliefs, but I will not always agree with them.
The moment we begin to fear the opinions of others and hesitate to tell the truth that is in us, and from motives of policy are silent when we should speak, the divine floods of light and life no longer flow into our souls.
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815 - 1902), 1890

If we were all preoccupied with farming our own food then who would run the insurance offices, hosptials and other businesses? We lived that way once and some still do but we "progressed" and the reality of going back to that lifestyle is never going to happen. What is the difference in the big picture of a few huge farms or a gazillion small ones? I don't see where spreading it all out would help anything. Should we rip down all the cities and revert back to farm life? What little forests we have left would have to be cut down to to make way for all the apartment dwellers that now need space to farm their own food. Deer and other big game are overpopulated in some areas and underpopulated in others. Managing wildlife is a difficult job even with the few hunters there are now...Let's send everyone into the woods now and see what happens. I know this is a bit cliche' but for every action is an equal and opposite reaction. In the quest for idealism there are huge prices to pay that I don't think peta or anyone else has the funds or resources to cover. Commercial farming is a problem. It has negative issues. Noone said it is perfect but everyone quitting their day job at once to farm their own food is not the answer. Come up with a better plan that won't bankrupt and otherwise devistate civilization and maybe someone will listen.

speaking over population..if peta thinks killing a few dozen cows is bad...look at china.
the chinese government thinks their way of controlling the human population is that families now are only allow to have one child and if the child is born a male, the baby lives. if it is born a girl, then the child is killed, no questions asked. (cuz women are the ones that have the abililty to give birth)
sad thing china is a communistic country that doesnt give a squat about their own people and their basic human rights. and people thought abortion is bad?? their government commits mass murders! but that's a whole other topic.

PETA=self righteousness. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that if the whole world took PETA up on everything they asked for that the impact of the changes would cause our extinction (except Cher of course) However...by pointing a finger at all that is immoral to them and living their own lives their own way, they get to feel good about themselves by putting everyone else down but change absolutley nothing and accomplish absolutely nothing except a few PETA execs are getting flithy rich by preying on the hippy flower children left in the world for their contributions that go to fixing NOTHING. They have all the accusations and questions but no answers to anything. It's so easy to say "Don't drink milk because milk causes veal" Nevermind all the jobs that would end if everyone stopped drinking milk today and why not just say "Don't buy veal"? It is quite possible to make milk and not veal. Does PETA have jobs lined up for all the out of work dairy related workers? You also do not want to be in any starbucks dealing with the masses when the latte runs out. People get pretty cranky about their morning cup of joe.

my local petco is wonderful. i bought my rtb from there and he's never had any health problems. i just had him checked out at the vet's yesterday and he got a good clean bill of health. petco always has what i need and almost all of them are really good with snakes. i've been back in the iso room numerous times and only found new animals under quarantine: all healthy and active. perhaps it's just the area i live in but every employee there seems to really love animals and know what they're doing. i'd say i frequent petco an average of 3 times a week! seems like i always need something =) what i am against though are these little pet shops in malls and shopping centers that cram several puppies (large and small) or kittens into teeny, high glass boxes. the animals dont look happy and always seem lethargic (from lack of exercise?). anywho, these places always stink horribly of feces and i cant imagine the owner treating these dogs right. many of the small animals look in poor shape also; the rats are shoved in 6 by 6 in cubes and there are far too many rabbits in one cage. my grandfather bought his siberian husky from one of these places. she was kept in one of the top cages and now is scared to death of going down two steps! poor puppy =(. i dont know what the petcos are like in your city, but mine's great.

What these groups may or may not accomplish really means very little, they feel their cause has meaning and purpose just like we all like to think ours does as well.
Just because they dont want to buy into the live fast, consume, procreate, consume, watch tv, consume, live in fear of the world, consume, lifestyle does not make them bad people who make bad choices, or uninformed.
Its too easy to chastise something that you personally may never completely understand (everyone in general, not one person specifically).
its true that the world will never go back to being filled with self sustaining individuals (there isnt enough money in it for the powers that be), being aware of our lifestyles (current) ultimately leading the end of human existance as we know it, is what needs to be understood.
EVERYONE RUN!!!!!!!!!!
The SKY IS FALLING!!!!!!!
