need computer help
I've somehow picked up a popup generator, and it's driving me crazy. I've run full scans with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot search & destroy, and McAfee, and I *still* get popups. Anyone have any suggestions, short of reformatting the hard drive and starting over?

It is probably the VX2 generator. It is a real pain to get off your system. But fortunatly for you I have the uninstaller that was put out by the corporation who created it. Go to my site and you can down load the .zip file with the uninstaller and Key. If this doesn't work you can e-mail me at david@buttoncomputers.com and give me more details on what it is doing and I am sure that I can get it removed for you. That is what I do for a living, fix computers.
Here is the link to the uninstaller. http://www.buttoncomputers.com/
Scroll down the page to near the bottom and you will see the VX2 uninstaller link.
Have a nice day.

One more thing, go to http://www.avast.com and download their home edition antivirus and register. The home edition is FREE and it is better than any AV I have seen in years. It filters everything that comes onto your computer before it gets in. I have been testig it for about 4 months now and it is amazing what it catches. It will pretty much end your popup and adware problems.

Downloaded and tried it, but it says "no version of the application found to uninstall". I get one ad when I restart the computer, but the rest are all associated with internet explorer. I get fewer after I've run spybot or ad-aware, but they are still there, and increase in frequency until I run them again.

try looking and browsing for it...if u go into add/remove programs and remove anything suspicious, that may help...otherwise keep trying Adaware and spybot, make sure they are updated...They usually never fail...

I put spy sweeper on the same page just below the other download. Try it. And make sure and run the updates before you scan your machine. It has found things that Ad-Aware hasn't in the past. The people who put out the popup adware are a pain in the #$%^$%^$%^& and trickier every day. That is why we are always having to update the spyware programs. I could just strangle them with my bare hands.

ok, downloaded and ran Avast and it has found a file that it cannot access. I tried to delete it manually and that doesn't work, either. What do I do now?

Yes run those spy removal programs I use adaware.
Also the best way to stop any future problems is to use Mozilla Firefox or Opera over Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has a ton of holes in it that cause the download of spyware. Also be carefull when downloading programs, alot of these also contain spyware.
You can get Mozilla Firefox at http://www.mozilla.org

What is the file, and did you let the avast program try to delete it?
This is really hard long distance, but I will keep at it until it is gone.

Search and purchase Pop-Up Stopper Professional if all else fails. It hasn't failed to block a popup window in over a year now. Great program!

OK, I let it run a boot scan, and it found and removed 7 infected files, including the one I couldn't delete. I then installed and ran Spy Sweeper, which found more things to delete. We'll see what happens.

Hmm, out of curiosity I ran Spybot again, and every time, it finds 5 entries under DSO exploit, even though it "repairs" them every time.

Won't it delete them instead of repairing?
