i gots a question....is esmerelda a surinam ETB???
i just ask because i like the way you can handle her.

me and a friend are splitting a 1.1 pair from ben siegel! i get the male next week.
i talked to nycspeed for a bit, and i researched the crap out of the net and got a ton of info.

i should have no probs at all. i already have the set up. i may put it up and running as soon as tommorow so it'll be ready when i put him in.

i just wanted to know, about the locale. i might put in the time later on and see if i can make them handleable (dont worry- i full know that they may not take)

i'll post pics next week so you all can see my new fella!

maybe then we can discuss some names for him

later

will

Esmerelda is a Northern ssp. (Guyana Shield) Emerald...she was captive bred here in Georgia but her lineage could either be Suriname or Guyana....there really is no distinction. Northerns have the little lightning bolt patterns as a general rule where Amazon Basins have a dorsal stripe with straight lines going out lateral from the dorsal stripe...sometimes the patterns vary a bit...some have no dorsal stripe or a broken one...sometimes emeralds can be totally patternless. There is a distinct difference in the nostrum scales. Northerns have larger scales on the snout whereas Amazon basins lack the oversized scales and have many more tiny scales covering the nose all the way until the labial scales around the mouth before they are enlarged.

As a rule....Amazon basins are much easier to tame. Northerns are seldom tamed. Esmerelda is somewhat an exception to that rule. If the snakes you guys are getting are babies...take your lumps early and NEVER grasp them behind the head...If you do, you will never tame them. Also...even if they do tame, you can't handle them often. They stress and become anorexic and/or start regurging if overhandled. Even a sweetheart like Esmerelda is handled on average of twice a month....maybe.

wow!
thanks for all the info.....you know what, if i were to start a handleing session- i would've went for the head first (now thinking about it)

glad to know that!!

i think this fella is going to for display, and only disturbed when cleaning.

this pair that we are getting are imports- and not as baby as you think. i would call them sub adults- they are eating very well ben said.

thanks for the info!

That's a new one to me too, I never new that about grasping behind the head. As far as handleing goes twice a month is about what I do as well, sometimes three depending on how often I have to clean an area of the cage that I may have to move her from. I am not sure how long Ben has had them or if he has had a fecal exam done, but that would be the first thing on my list of things to do.

wassup nyc!

ben is great. the snakes are eating regularly and doing fine.
he does all treatments of all kinds when all the animals come into his warehouse, especially these being imported!

anyday now.........i'm so nervous!!!!!!!

i went and got a bag of cyprus and some pothos plants (they are pretty cheap!! 2 bux!!)
we are rigging bamboo (grown right here in yonkers...) in various places for perches.

i am also rigging a real pothos plant (if it works) at the top and spread out to make a leafy hide. something tells me i am gonna have to go with a fake plant (s) to make this work for a hide.

thanks guys.
