steve irwin (get ready)
taken from the venom list
Subject: [venomlist] Steve Irwin
Since Steve Irwin has been coming up recently I thought that I would pass this along. I received a call about two weeks ago from an Indiana resident wanting me to ID a rattlesnake he had seen in his yard. Since most of the calls turn out to be a non-venomous snakes shaking their tails in dry leaves, I asked the caller how he determined that it was a rattlesnake.
He said that he was sure that it was a rattlesnake because he had held the end of its tail in his hand. Naturally, I asked him, why he had its tail in his hand. His reply was, "That's how Steve-O does it." His next sentence was, "But you know, they don't like it."
The only reason the caller was not bitten was because when he snake turned and struck it wrapped itself around a clump of tall grass and fell short of the caller's hand. The snake turned out to be a timber rattler.
I suggested that the caller watch Venom ER before making any other attempts at handling venomous snakes.

i have no doubt that numerous people have already been tagged because they were imitating the great stevo, but for whatever reason the stories never made the news. maybe after reflecting on it they realized they would come across looking like a total idiot. nah, probably not. stupid people like that dont do much reflecting on anything. lol

Yeah I am with ya Stormy!
The other week I saw a guy 'controlling' a lion with two long pieces of cane so they could film it for a car commercial.
I can't wait till my trip to Africa so I can try that myself.!!
Then just the other day I saw someone on telly diving (no cage) with great white sharks armed with nothing but an 8ft pole.!! It's easy any one can do it!!.
Then there was this guy doing motorcycle stunts with no helmet.......
My point being, If you want to ban one from your tv screens you have to ban them all otherwise it is just hypocritical.

I think the main problem with Steve is that he takes no responsibility for his influence.

I totally agree BW. I am just so happy that I don't have to explain to my daughters why grabbing a rattlersnake by the tail is just not good

Not that it makes a bit of difference at all to most viewers of his programs.... Almost every episode that he is handling snakes he does say that he has years of experience and people should not handle animals in the wild.
What about the new snake "expert" on animal planet that goes about taking pictures of snakes... crawling up slowly on his belly to get pics of a spitting cobra on | |
