Freezing Substrate

I went and picked up some mulch today, and on the way home I got to thinking. Now, this may seem like a dumb idea but I though it was worth asking. Would freezing your substrate work as good as putting it in the oven? I figured it works on rats so why not substrate. Of, course you would have to have the room in the freezer, but you wouldn't have to worry about your house catching on fire.

hmm. Never heard of that. But many bugs are much more tolerant to cold than heat. Since in rats, you are trying to kill internal nasties that require a host. And in mulch, you are trying to kill external parasites that may be used to cold temps in the winter since they are not housed internally in a host species.

i DON'T DO ANYTHING TO MY MULCH IN THE WINTER--MAN CAPS AGAIN---sorry I keep forgetting
As I said, when it's frozen I leave it alone--and I haven't had any problems. And with the way I have been paranoid about it in the warmer month I asked the zookeeper at the reptile house because we get our mulch from the same source--she said she never treats it with anything. So basically I'm thinking there is probably very few problems related to it--or not enough for them to be more precautions ?
