Thickness of wood and plexiglasss
It's my 1st time to build my own cages. I have got most of the plans made out, just have a couple questions. I was wondering what thickness should the wood and glass be and what size screws should be used? Also I have seen some pics of cages on this site, and some of the ones I have seen have a light on the inside with wire mesh covering them to keep the snake from burning themselves. My question is will the wire mesh not get hot and burn the snake (if they touch it) anyway?

I also used 3/4" plywood. I can't remember exactly what thickness plexiglass I used for the front... but I'm looking at a ruler right now, and think it must be either 3/16" or 1/4" thick. I wouldn't mind it being a little thicker, but really, I think anything over 1/4" wouldn't really be worth the extra cost. -that's just me though.
Good luck w/ the cage!

Where can I find free plans on building cages? with a list on the materials used, Prices, and where to get some of the stuff. I looked at Home Depot for the shower surround and asked them where it would be and they had not Idea what I was talking about.

What do you use to apply the shower surround to the wood? Is there any other choices besides shower surround?

I'd be afraid to use that on the front of a 6'x2'x2' cage with a large boa. It's not strong enough in my opinion.
|
Depends on how its built. I guess you expecting one large door, in that case unless the plexi is very secure, either with wood glue or small screws, yes it could pop out.. however, if you have more than one door, supports for the doors, bla bla bla, lots of things could factor into this.
For that matter you could have.. could mind you, have three doors over that span... each 2ft wide.. if you frame that in 1x2 you are only going to have a span of plexi of < 1.5sq ft.

of course, it wasn't exactly plexiglass, I used Lucite, its supposed to be stronger, and I do have supports on it blah blah blah... I know mine is secure but it does depend on a lot of things

you can get away with 5/8 thick wood without any problem it is very strong. thickness of ply wod for the snake your keeping I would suggest 1/4 thick. one thing I did was cut a mortuse in to the edges of the doors and and just slide the plexy in cut. it come out looking awesome.
