Gourmet Rodent
America has a sterotype view of rats being nothing but a disgusting sewer infesting disease spreading problem. In other countrys they are considered a treat and a delicacy. It seems our snakes aren't the only ones taking a liking to rats, and aren't the only ones that acquired a sweet tooth for them. Vietnam specializes in the cooking and serving of rats.
Check out this article I found on the catching, preparing, and serving of these critters. They have some pictures of prepared rodents ready to eat which IMO would make upchuck.

Not much of a stereotype - they really are a problem in the urban areas of America, and every other big city in the world.
And Rats WERE responsible for the Black Plague, albiet through the fleas that they carried, killing 1/3 of the population of Europe by the time it was finished.

Vietnam is also a very poor under developed country with a severe over crowding problem in it's cities. The people there as in a lot of cities with poor economic conditions will make do with the food sources that are readily available. In an over crowded dirty urban area rats are going to be plentiful.

Look up the Pealjam lyrics to "Rats" sometime whe you are really bored. Due to the profanity, I won't post them here but it's a totally different view on rats that makes you wonder about human "civilization". All the things that Eddie Vedder point's out that rats don't do in their culture, humans are extremely guilty of.

People eat some 48,000 rats every day in the Mekong Delta, making humans by far the most important rat predator in Vietnam
|
That is ALOT of rats for people to be eating in just one day, and that is in only one part of Vietnam, not the whole place.
