Go to home depot and get a bag of Cypress mulch. First with no matter what substrate you get, treat it for mites. Either bake it for 20 minutes at 200-250 degrees. Or treat with Provent A Mite, or do both.
Please DO NOT feed on the cypress mulch. The pieces will get stuck to the prey and ingested in the snake and cause major problems.
I know you want a natural looking substrate for your enclosure, but newspaper is much better. I never have to worry about substrate getting ingested, plus when cleanup times comes around it is much easier to clean, plus you KNOW you got the whole mess. With cypress and other substrates you never really know how far the urine has traveled.

Yeah, newspaper is really the safest way to go.
I had a baby Ball convince me of this....
Lets just say it took 2 of us to safely get that piece of (shredded) aspen out of her throat,(almost a bad day).
Let alone how much easier it is to clean or how little it costs.
..oh yea.. then there is the lack of sweeping and or vaccuming needed with loose substrate.

room mates, eh? I use paper towels for my bedding. Looks a little nicer than newspaper, not natural of course, but it's pure white. It has a better absorbancy for urine. The price isn't so bad. You can get like 15 rolls of it for under 6$. (if you buy in bulk)
