Well if he got it Locally, and he is in New York that is *edited Found a sighting in the atlantic. Most common in open water though.
Plus judging from the size of the tooth it is from a smaller shark, comparing to the size of his finger in the backround.

Its about 1" long. I was leaning towards a sand shark. Don't makos hanve skinnier, more sharper teeth, so they can grasp there prey without it shakign free? This looks like it came from a heavy build shark that would bite down and tear away by head shaking.

It depends on were in the mouth the tooth is located. I actualy used to collect shark teeth, and I can remember that alot of my Mako Sharks resembled that tooth.

Any idea of area of origin? Considering there is over 350 different species of shark, that leaves lots of coices.
Yes Mako's have Long teeth, since they are mostly fish eaters. A mako's Teeth are similar to the grey nurse shark, that used to be known as the Sand tiger shark. Very long and almost needle like.

Im sticking to my Mako theory. Since the shark is much younger length in the tooth makes no difference.

As you can see some teeth are longer then others, while some are shorter and wider.

It also depends on the part of the mouth, front of the jaw might be longer and sharper(for biting and wounding)while the back are wider, rather then longer so they can chew there food.

I also think that they may be from a Grey Reef Shark. I've gone scuba diving with them and they have similar teeth structure according from experience and this pic.

A more likely source i would say is from a smaller shark, such as a spiny Dogfish or a thresher
