Ingredient may be harmful?
Just got this email from a old online friend.
Hi Nicole!!
It's been a LONG time, I hope all is well with you and yours and you had a wonderful Mother's day!!
Reason I am writing, (and sorry I didn't write sooner), is because of something that came up on the forum. It is in regards to commercial foods sold for reptiles and fish. Numerous ones of them contain a chemical known as Ethoxyquin. (it is a pesticide/insecticide used as an antioxidant to preserve the food) Not sure if you are aware of it, so thought I would write. There are some links to read about this nasty chemical too:
http://www.petcaretips.net/ethoxyquin.html
Antioxidant
http://chemistry.about.com/library/g...y/bldef350.htm
Definition: An enzyme or other organic molecule that can counteract the damaging effects of oxygen in tissues. Although the term technically applies to molecules reacting with oxygen, it is often applied to molecules that protect from any free radical (molecule with unpaired electron).
Doing a Google seach on Ethoxyquin brings up A LOT more nightmares about it. If you'd like, I could send you some links for reading or sharing.
Have a wonderful day!
Take care,
Marie

Not real surprising. Something had to kill all those canned crickets and meal worms. I actually see people buyin that junk too and when i tell them that live is so much better, they tll me wil if it wasn't good for them they wouldn't sell it. I tell her they sell heat rocks don't they? When they reply with Yeah so, is about the time i usually get kicked out of the store.

This is really disturbing to me. I have used many products that contain this stuff.
Thanks for posting it. Is there any thing a vet can check into to see if any damage is done?

this is the first I have heard of it myself so I'm really not sure what the damage is in the end. It just goes to show you that whether it's a bulb that's claiming great numbers or a food item that's spouting great balance...we are on our own. We nee to check our own uvb output and rely on basic whole foods. Many items sold for reptiles are harmful to them unfortunately.
Anything that sounds too good to be true usually is.
