Lots of people on the site do it themselves. I'm not one of them. not comfortable with it yet. i still do it visually. If I'm off once in a while no biggy, just wont get babies from that one.

The safest way to determine the sex of a boa up without probing involves running your finger and thumb along the top and bottom of the tail from below the vent. Your forefinger should be on the top and your thumb should be on the bottom. Only apply as much pressure as you feel necessary, and with a smaller boa, you should not need to use that much pressure that all. If you feel two small BB-like tissue lumps (the hemipenes), you have a male. If there are no small lumps, you have a female. This is the safest way as long as you do not apply excessive pressure. The most often mistake is determining a male to be a female, and not the other way around. Also, males tend to have long skinny tails whereas females and have shorter fatter tails. If you are concerned about this, it would be best to take your snake to a vet. I would never suggest an amateur probing their snakes without an experienced person showing them the process. Hope this helps, good luck!
