More Respect!

It seems like everywhere i go where i live, there's alot of people who think snakes are terrible and need to die. They actually believe that all snakes are "poisonous'' and that the snakes want to come after them and bite them.
I got really upset yesterday when i went to a local lake to fish and i found a dead snake floating in the water. I picked it up and found that not only was it dead, but it was headless. I figure that someone thought it was a copperhead and chopped off its head (thats' really common around here). But it was def. a northern water snake. The fact that people can do this to these animals disgusts me.
I know that copperheads can be found near/in water, but that doesnt mean that all water snakes are copperheads. The thing is, people know that copperheads are venemous...so why in the world would they pick it up and mess w/ it to chop off its head!? The fact that they are potentially harmful is more reason to leave them alone!!
And venemous snakes don't want to waste their venom on us...im sure they'd rather use it for .... eating!
Isn't there a law against cruelty to animals!? I think all animals deserve equal rights!!! There should seriously be a law for this.
Okay, i just had to get that off my chest....

upsetting, yes. but it is common. and i don't know how cruelty to animals applies to snakes, but if it does it sure isn't enforced. too bad it wasn't a kitten, then it'd be on the news.

True.. I use a shovel, but that's just me

Just kidding by the way

People are scared of what they have little knowledge of or poor knowledge of.Who can't argue that most, if not all of us are guilty of beiong ignorant of at least one thing at some point in our lives?

Oh how true that statement is.
The only way to help this problem is to educate people. I help do educational shows for wildlife and we take the snakes every chance we get. Some people walk away from our shows with a better respect and a better attitude once they learn a bit about snakes. Some come by and are totally terrified of snakes but leave feeling better about them. This is a problem we will always face and it is also something we will always have to tolerate but on the good side... some people are willing to listen and have a change of heart.

i think the only way to address the problem effectively is to pass a law that says purpotrators of snake killings will have their arms cut off.

yes, it may seem harsh, but i think it's fair. once the arms have been removed the legs must be bound together.

once the legs are securely bound they must then wiggle their way through a pit of glass and extremely spikey cactuses whilst the worst non hits of abba are played at 500DB.

oh, then someone yells SNAKE! and cuts their heads off.

this i will make law if you make me president. promise.

Woah!!! That is one helluva a way to teach a person a lesson. It's a little extreme and doesn't leave much room for second chances, now does it? It's ok, i know you were kidding; at least i hope you were kidding. Anyway, i do agree, there should be some law against animal cruelty of this magnitude. Education is also a great way to stop ignorance and fear of the "unknown"

Actually, I would come closer to choping the head off a watersnake than a copperhead lol. Copperheads make much better pets.
