Humidity
Okay, I want to put some plastic on the outside of the front screen of my ig cage to raise up his humidity. The front panel is the only screen part, besides some of the top for the lights.
The front is 5 x 4.
The plastic is sort of opaque, so would it bother him? Where should the plastic go in relation to the whole front of the cage? ex: along the bottom half, all over, on half of the front vertically?
Wow, i dont know if this is making sense....
His humidity gets low really fast, so im spraying all the time, but he gets his bath and spraydowns...Any help??

Have you considered using a moist substrate and a pan so he can soak when he needs to?
I just rotated pans in all my cages (after disinfecting them).
The beardies (they are in the same cage as of this week) are using the iguana pan (whichI am shocked that my large beardy is actually using---she is soaking each morning)
The Iguanas have the tegu pan (which is being used just not infront of me---I see all the dead skin)
And the tegus have a plastic drawer from the children's playroom.
I think all animals enjoy soaking when they need/want to.
Between that and the moist substrate (my iggy's dig under rocks to sleep so they are surrounded by moist substrate all night) it should be fine.
Have you had any difficult sheds?

Thanks for the compliments dirt_jumper and arbo!!
Nicole, The litter pan on the floor of the cage in the pic is half full of water (there's no slip bath tub cut outs in the bottom for traction). I've never seen him actually soak in it...only poop, and he always hates his baths (which i force him to take at least every few days). He has another water dish (smaller) above on the shelf of his cage. I've never thought to use any other type of substrate(for fear of impaction...he likes to try to eat EVERYTHING). Theres' linolium on the floor, and then there's indoor outdoor carpet on the shelves.
What type of substrate would you reccommend??

Mine never do---I put all their food in bowls. Where does he sleep?
If you have never used substrate, and he will not use a hide (because he never has) then it would not be helpfull to change to cypress. My WD's are no longer on substrate--they sleep in branches now.
Is there a reason you are concerned about humidity? Has he had some bad sheds?
I wish cyclura.com was up---John's wife is still working on the site. They have indoor cyclura rooms---very plain with nothing except a dog house like structure. For humidity, they use a humidifier...have you considered this?

I'm late...lol. He hasnt' had any bad sheds, but i was told that iguana's can die from renal failure from low humidity ( i guess cuz of dehydration), but i dont' know if its true. I have considered getting a humidifier....
Does anyone know of a small (mobile-ish) one that can be put inside or right outside, pointing in to his cage.
Since his cage is made of wood, although it is sealed w/ polyurethane, i am worried that it will basically deteriorate from the humidity from his cage all the time....do you guys thing that would happen or how long before it would?

Correct me if I am wrong here but... if he is in a herp room, IE door can be closed. and that is a screen cage... why cant you just use a room humidifier from wal-mart? if the room is up to X the screen cage will no doubt be X.. right?

I don't want everything to be of high humidity because i dont' want any sort of bacteria buildup or anything. Plus all the animals don't need high humidity...will they be effected if they;re in aquariums or vision cages? Its not just a herp room(all herps are in there).. office room too...but that doesnt take up much space or anything. Also carpeted floor, but i dont know if that would make a difference. ?

toker is correct ---I got mine at Kmart and it has a dial in which you can choose relative humidity. Do you have any species in that room which require very low humidity?
You can (as long as you use distilled water) get an ultrasonic humidifier and keep it fairly close to his cage OR you can get a misting system for his cage alone set on a timer and add substrate---OR you can place acrylic on the front of the cage and pipe it in. The pipe system is just some PVC attached to an ultrasonic humidifier leading into a specific cage so the whole room doesn't get blasted....it's really all about how you want to go about it.
I'm at a point where the animals I have who require any type of humidity use burrows for that requirement.
The lacerta for example has a mister to keeep his substrate damp so when he sleeps he gets the moisture he lacks through the ambient relative stuff....
For ambient humidity it gets more involved as you can see. There are solutions but with humidity too much is a breeding ground for bacteria and not enough can dry out tropical species. With your setup your best choice is a human humidifier really----since a misting system would not really help a carpeted enclosure.

also the weather is changing---humidity is abundant in the summer and late spring---do you have ac in the room or anything that would suck the moisture out of the air?

Yep, since its a room in the refinished basement, there's an overhead vent for ac/heat. I keep it closed all the time in the summer cuz i like it warmer in there. I think im pretty much set on going out and getting a people humidifier and setting it up right next to his cage. The animals needing lower humidity are in basically closed cages (vision) so i guess they'll be fine. If not, i can always work around that.

Okay, my brother has moved back home for the summer, so i was forced to put my iguana cage in my bedroom. its got my bed, my parakeet, a dresser, carpeted floor, and ig cage.
So my mother doesnt want me to use a humidifier cuz she thinks it'll screw up the house or something...
Will it still be possible for me to use a humidifier...but instead of a room humidifier, i could get a small one to go right into his cage.???
Also, does anyone know of a specific brand of humidifier that's reliable but not expensive that would be able to fit in the cage (pictured above)??
Thanks!!
