If your friend insists on getting an iguana just emphasize he should read up as much as he can about them BEFORE getting one. There's plenty of published and web information about their +'s and -'s!

Otherwise, I agree with you in that a beardy would be a better choice as a first lizard. My beardy "Leonotis" (or Leo for short) is a very cool animal. Beardies can get upwards of 18 to 24 inches long which is quite a handful. I've had to treat Leo lately for a stomach bug. If your friend doesn't think a 2' lizard isn't very powerful, he should try medicating one! I've since learned how strong Leo's jaws are, and that he knows how to use his claws!!! I couldn't imagine treating a 6' long iguana that doesn't want to take oral meds...and they've got a more formidable tail too!

I've with Steve. Theres absolutely -no- excuse for anyone getting an iguana and not knowing what they are getting into. There is more than enough information out there for people who lift a finger to try... but I think your friend would get much more enjoyment out of a bearded dragon. God knows, if I had a chance to do it over, I'd get beardies and run away from igs.

to agree with SteveP make sure your friend knows everthing about them
I personally don't like iggs I have never come across one that actually
liked to be handeled. Whereas my berdy loves to be held.
Just do your best to inform him of the negatives and the positives there is nothing else that you can do
