I might be purchasing a green iguana. I was just checking to see what siza of an enclosure I should have when it reaches max size. Is there a rule for iguanas like snakes have that 1 sq ft for every foot of snake. Also does anyone know where to get some good iguana tanks. Thanks in advance. I have heard it mentioned that iguanas need a cage that measures no less than 6' high, X 4' X 4' I wouldn't know as I have never had any urge to get an ig.

Squeezer's previous owner also had an iggie. The enclosure he built was probably 3x7x7. I know they need a lot of room. I would think 4x4 would be too small considering iguanas get to be what, 4 or 5 ft long. I don't know for sure.

Hey Stretch.
Before even considering purchasing an iguana you need to do much more research.
RH/RTB Iguana caresheet
You may want to consider adopting an unwanted rescue iguana. There are so many that need homes and most are for no adoption fee.
Iguanas are cheap, but are expensive to keep.
1. large inclosure (bigger the better, size that Morti said as a minimum)
2. large variety of fresh greens, veggies, and such
3. correct UVA/UVB lighting and basking
4. VET CARE is one that many forget (fecal check, wellness check, and the OMG what happened!)
5. etc., etc., etc.
Good luck!

I'm doing my research. I'm just deciding what would be a better new addition. A atb or a iguana. Trust me though I'm doing my research on both. Thanks for the reply's though.

You can always give it it's own room to freeroam. That would be plenty of room lol.
I think the cage size Morti mentioned should be concidered a minimun size only.
A cage would really need to be 7 to 8' L x 6' H x 4' D to give it a little moving around room.

Yeah, the bigger the better. I have a 2 year old iguana, and she has gone through a 10 gallon tank (when she was about 7 inches) to a 50 gallon tank, and finally to one that is about the size of a large upright piano. She spends most of here time on top of it though, lol. I plan on making here one as big as I can, mabey half a room, as soon as I get a bigger house. This is a great website for reading about Iggies----> http://hem.passagen.se/greencream99/?noframe
Lots of pictures of his pets. Great pics from month 1, to full grown, great habitat pics, and indepth food talk to. Check it out, and good luck. Iguans are an awsome pet, they are like having a dianasour in your house. They do take MUCH care, a large voriety of food, constant handelling to make them calm, and you must always remember that they still are a wild animal.
With that said, if you are the kind of person to get overly consumed with your pets, and gives them averything then need and want, you will make a great iguana owner! Good luck with your decision.

a small, female, adult iguana must have a cage no larger than 4' wide, 3' deep, and 5' high - and that is pretty small. you've pretty much got to make your own cage for one - there is no cage i've ever seen for sale that is suitable for a green iguana over 6 months of age. the cage also has to have a lot of climbing branches - the more the better! these guys are arboreal and will spend 95% in the tree tops. if they can not climb in captivity, their arm and leg muscles will literally waste away.
another common misconception about iguanas is that they eat cat food or need a lot of protein - actually the complete opposite is true. iguanas should eat collard greens, turnip greens, kale, and mustard greens. an adult should also have about a cup of chopped fruit (apples, banana, kiwi, yellow squash, zucchini squash, and pears are great) each week. they should never eat spinach (it binds calcium) and can only have a little orange or other citrus ever 6 months or so - it's too acidic.
iguanas also need - NEED not *want* - uva and uvb.
please please please go to http://www.anapsid.org - this website is managed by melissa kaplan - she knows everything there is to know about green iguanas and her website is THE source for those interested in purchasing one. read all you can at her site before deciding if such a large lizard is really for you.

having owned several rescue iguanas, i suggest you do an enormous amount of research before you decide to get one. if you dont have at least 1-2 hrs daily to spend taming dont bother because you will wind up with a5-6ft. dinosaur who is only too happy to use his mouthful of sharklike teeth and his bullwhip tail. that said, when properly trained they mske amazing pets. i lost my 5ftr. in january and still look for him to greet me everyday when i get home from work.

Tanks?? lol
My 2 year old has 5'L x 3'D x 4'H cage, but im not sure how long that'll last!
It's good to hear that you are doing your research before you get the ig! It is extremely important to know what you are getting yourself into before you get into it. Iguanas are really great animals, but need an owner with alot of time, patience and money to spend w/ them. Good luck with your decision!! | |
