verry worried about my iguana....
an accident happened a few days ago... my iguana is in shed and has bits of skin falling off everywhere. my boyfriend didn't know that you should never peel back skin shedding on it's own. he pulled a peice up to her spikes and he says that he ripped it slightly at the base and some blood started comming out. I already have an iguana first aid kit, so right away I cleaned the area with a betadine solution and neosporin after it was a bit dry. It was very clean after that, I wasn't too worried. she was calm the whole time... she actually liked my nurse beahaviour I think!
anyways... she usually sits high up on her cage, so today I noticed it was kinda darker in that one spot, sort of like a small scab. I got her to come down and i noticed it was all icky and actually looked really bad. and she worst part, she had 2 spikes hanging off one was already missing.
my girl was in such good health! I'm so sad about the spike loss and even more worried about possible infection. I have a picture, it's quite graphic. It looks worse on my camera, I'm so sick inside for her
here's the pic.
more bad news, vet is closed this weekend... so monday is her appointment. until then she told me to get her in the shower, rinse her down than apply the rest of my betadine and try to keep the area dry after that, no neosporin.
hope she's gonna be okay, I'm so worried.

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
That definetely looks like it could be on the verge of infection. Keep up with the betadine and neosporin, but a vet-check is definetely gonna be needed. The poor baby..! I hope she gets better.

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
I think it'll be fine. They survive much worse in the wild. The vet visit sounds like a good idea though.

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
monday morning 10 am she will be there! It looks like it's drying up a little at least... I'll keep you updated this weekend, hopefully I'll have no reason to panic before the vet check.
thanks everyone

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
Owch. At least she doesn't seem to be in too much pain if she was calm for you. I hope the vet tells you something helpful and she gets better. All my vet does is poke around and tells me useless info and charges me oodles for papers. -_-!!
But good luck with her and I hope it doesn't get infected. She's lucky to have a good mommy like you. =]

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
Oh my, I understand why you must feel so worried and sad about this, being an iguana mom like me!
I think she will be fine, especially if you do take her to the vet Monday.
By the way - I cannot see the picture.

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
OK I see the picture now. seems to me you should try and keep it as dry as possible. There is a great cream called silver sulphadiazine that works well for cuts and bruises, and wounds like that. Worked great on my iggy whose leg was almost amputated at the joint once.

Re: verry worried about my iguana....
here is a picture of the spot today, looks a bit better... looks like that spike on the left might be getting infected at the base.
