Thinkin' about an Ig
So, I've been thinking lately about getting an Iguana. I'm in no hurry though and would like to wait a year or two or even longer, depending a lot on where I'll be in the future. I'm almost 17(will be 17 in about a month) and really don't want to get in over my head! I figure in a year or so I should have a decent job, my current living status will be the same, and I plan on going to a college close to home. Of course there is always unplanned things in life, so like I said..it all depends on how clear my future is. Even if I don't get one 'soon' I would still like to own one at some point in my future. I think they are magnificent animals and my brother use to have one when I was little and it was one of my favorite pets in the house growing up. I've been researching them a bit and found a lot of information on this site ( Green Iguana Society)..I plan on researching a lot more and any suggestions on good websites/books/other sources would be greatly appreciated!
I've also looked into a rescue, but I've encountered a slight problem with this. Almost every single Iggy I've seen that is in a rescue is in need of an "Experienced Iguana Keeper" =( Also, I kinda want to start off with a baby/small Ig because I figured by the time I get one, Steve will be well moved to a bigger cage.So his 4X2X2 (LXWXH) would be good for a baby Ig with a bit of redecorating lol..And will give me a bit of time to start on making a bigger cage for it. Not saying I wont rescue, just saying I'm not really sure what I'm going to do ATM!
Like I said, this is set far off from now, but I love researching and learning! So, any advice/experience/good learning resources/or just about anything will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks a million!

Re: Thinkin' about an Ig
I would suggest getting a rescue for sure.
My first reptile was an Iguana. They have the most awesome cat-like personalities.
I want to get another one once I'm settled down.

Re: Thinkin' about an Ig
So long as you understand that an adult iggy requires a large cage in a tropical environment. I'll admit in my youth, I purchased a baby iggy. I had her for several years until she reached the 5 foot mark. I only had room for a 55 gal aquarium so I traded her back to the pet store. They were amazed at how docile she was.

Re: Thinkin' about an Ig
We recently were given a 2 foot long Cuban Rock Iguana. They grow alot slower than a green iguana, eat the same diet, seem to be much more intelligent, and don't require as much humidity. They get bulkier though. There's not much info on the 'net for them. A couple of good references are Cyclura :: Cyclura and Reptilecare.com - Cyclura Iguanas.
A local iguana rescue usually has a few Cyclura available, maybe you have one near you.

We may breed ours, if the female is willing. We got them together twice. The first time the male took a chunk out of her. 2 weeks later he mounted her a few times but she wasn't very interested. They never wrapped tails. We may try one more time. I don't know if she's even got any eggs.
We were given the Cuban Rock Ig. She's beautiful! Not as calm as the Tegu's but hopefully she'll calm down once she gets used to us.
