Baby iguana diet?
Just got a baby red today. Whats the best thing to feed baby iguanas? She's about 8 inches long from head to back legs. Everyone give me your opinions!

Re: Baby iguana diet?
I fed mine a varied diet of collard and mustard greens, swiss chard, butternut squash, green beans, carrots, raspberries, bell peppers, etc. I tried to vary the diet every few weeks. I would get up 1/2 hr or so early twice a week and chop up every thing very small, fill a large freezer bag and it would be enough to feed my iggy twice a day for 3-4 days.
Check out Melissa Kaplan's guide to iggy's if you haven't already
http://www.anapsid.org/pdf/icfs.pdf
and I highly recommend the "Ultimate Owner's Manual" which is a great book
Green Iguana - The Ultimate Owner's Manual
I miss my iggy but she's got a good home.
Good luck!

Re: Baby iguana diet?
Oh, and you can give them rose petals or hibiscus flowers as a treat, just make sure they were not sprayed with pestasides.
I also forgot to mention I added a dusting of alfala and calcium powder to the morning meal. Got both at a GNC type place for decent prices.

Re: Baby iguana diet?
I'll agree.....dark leafy greens, but no spinich. There is too much phosphorous in spinich....its either phosphorous or nitrogen..... Collards are my personal fav, and one ig I met, loved mangoes as a treat every once in a while.
Safeway, if you live near one, has collard leaves that you can buy 1 at a time if you want. Food process some butternut squash....even raw okra.
Check out Melissa Kaplan....She knows her stuff. The Ultimate Owners Manual is also a great resource. One of my favorite books about igs.

Re: Baby iguana diet?
Can't add anything to all this great information and guidance you have already got here! Except give him a nice pool to soak/swim in, they love the water. He will poo in it too so you will have to change it regularly! And they love being sprayed with fine warm mist.
Some "Old Fashioned" Quaker oats sprinkled now and then on his veggies/fruit is much appreciated (mine love it - they lick it up flake by flake).
I would love to see some pics of your baby red ig. Love iguanas.
There - I have added quite a bit anyway.
Congrats on your acquisition.

I don't know that there's anything 'nice' about it lol...but there sure is a LOT of it at times...you'd be surprised the deuce (for you Nicole they can drop...ick!
But yeah, outstanding diet advice above, and be sure to supplement, but NOT over-supplement, and good UVB source is a must, as they need it to organically produce vit. D3 to metabolize their calcium, unlike carnivorous reptiles who recieve the correct ratio in their whole animal diets.
Give him lots of attention and PATIENCE...iguanas can be extremely frustrating at times, but also so rewarding, they are an awesome lizard
